well don't i feel more than a bit silly. i've got this borrowed g23, and i'm trying to clean it before i return it... but i can't figure out how to get the slide off. i've found what i presume to be the takedown lever - little sliders on each side of the frame that seem opposed to me having fingers - but i can't figure out how to work them. they only seem to move while the slide is locked back, and either i can't keep them held down while releasing the slidelock, or that's now how it works.

can someone help me out?

1. remove magazine
2. verify gun is empty
3. verify the gun is empty
4. verify the gun is empty
5. pull trigger (trigger must be in the pulled position to remove slide)
6. move the slide back about 1/8 of an inch...but not far enough to reset trigger
7. use those two little take down levers at the same time (pushing down)..the slide will then be able to go forward off the receiver

Take the magazine out.
Make sure the chamber is empty.
Check the chamber again.
Point it in a safe direction.
Pull the trigger.
Stick your thumb in the front of the trigger guard. Wrap your fingers around the slide.
Pull the slide back slightly (quarter to half an inch).
Pull the "buttons" down with the other hand.
Let the slide go.
It should slide off the front of the frame--if it has a NY spring you may have to lightly hold back on the trigger to get it all the way off.

OR--you could buy a box of Federal ammunition, take it to the range, and let it disassemble itself. :p

If you decide to use the dishwasher--a perfectly acceptable alternative--be sure and use the top shelf and select the economy mode. If you use the drier, the frame can melt (or warp). :p

An easier method of taking a Glock apart:

1. Assemble a handloaded cartridge with a double charge of fast-burning powder.
2. Load the cartridge in the pistol.
3. Point the pistol in a safe direction.
4. Pull the trigger.

To reassemble the Glock, place the disassembled parts in box with a check for the appropriate amount, and mail it back to Glock.

Simple... I think.

Even simpler. You don't even have to assemble your own handload. You can easily accomplish the same thing with Federal factory loads!

Interesting ammo-involved diassembly suggestions, but they didn't work for the FBI during their Field Suitability Evaluation of the models 22 and 23, now current issue for all new agents.

The last abuse test had a bullet lodged in the barrel, one inch in front of the chamber. Then one round of service ammunition was fired with the obstruction in place. The pistol could not rupture or fragment the frame slide or barrel. As an added test five more rounds were fired after the first round cleared the barrel obstruction.

9x19,

Let it go... I don't think there's any need to defend Glocks on this thread.

I seriously doubt that readers are going to consider it rational to respond to a post asking for help CLEANING a gun with multiple posts about fanciful ways to DESTROY the gun.

Just havin' a little fun. Too much time, too little to do. Oh, yeah, I guess I could be raking leaves, but that's too much like work!
