After attacks, Europe hurries to tighten gun laws

By MATTI HUUHTANEN, Associated Press Writer

HELSINKI – Several European countries have restricted gun laws in the wake of school massacres, gang violence and other gun-related crimes:

_Finland announced plans Wednesday to impose stricter restrictions on firearms, including raising the minimum age for handgun ownership from 15 to 20. The proposal was prompted by two school massacres within a year in which lone gunmen opened fire on classmates and teachers.

_Germany, where a gunman killed at least 11 people Wednesday, raised the legal age for owning recreational firearms from 18 to 21 following a 2002 shooting in Erfurt that killed 16 people, including 12 teachers.

_Belgian lawmakers passed strict new gun control laws in 2006 in reaction to the racially motivated shooting deaths of a toddler and her black baby sitter in Antwerp.

_Swiss citizens are demanding a referendum aimed at confining army weapons to military compounds and banning private purchases of pump-action rifles and automatic weapons — following a spate of suicides and homicides.

_The Portuguese Parliament is currently discussing a government proposal to tighten gun laws, including denying bail to anyone suspected of a gun crime.

_Denmark's government said last week it will raise the penalty for illegal gun possession as part of a crackdown on gang violence that has killed three people and injured 25 in recent months.

_European Union lawmakers proposed tighter gun control across the bloc last year, including guidelines saying that only people over 18 not deemed a threat to public safety could buy and keep guns. EU members have until 2010 to adopt the measures.

In addition, some U.S. states have recently tightened gun laws as well:

• Colorado, a year after the 1999 Columbine High School shootings, made it a felony to buy a firearm for another person who should know the transaction is illegal, barred anyone from giving a firearm to a juvenile without the consent of the parents; made it illegal for a person not to try to prevent a juvenile from committing a gun crime; and increased the penalty for possession of a weapon by a felon.

But three years later, the state expanded gun rights instead, by requiring sheriffs to issue gun permits to people who pass a criminal background check, prohibiting local governments from making gun laws more restrictive than the state's, and abolishing local registries of gun owners.

• In Virginia, where a student killed 32 people at Virginia Tech in 2007 before committing suicide April 16, 2007, the governor signed an executive order requiring that anyone ordered by a court to get mental health treatment be added to a database of people barred from buying guns.

The time to crack down on and go the extra mile to disarm your people is when you have a large number of immigrants from the third world that practice a faith that demands they kill off all the unbelievers.

Way to go Europe!

Leave it to the AP to make that sound like a BAD thing.

In Europe child discipline is illegal, so kids never know the right way to grow up. This whole neo-socialist, sterilized Godless, equalized utopian theocracy is going to blow up in their faces. And now you have a bunch of gun toting and unscrupulous foreigners who are smuggling in masses of guns illegaly and using it on the unarmed, sterile brain europeans. THey have sterilized brains over there. To them, whatever the government wants must be. Its all about empowering the state and turnign a blind eye to the failures of the state against the criminal element that is proliferating. The criminals in Europe or patting that scumbag German kid on the back. Thanks to him, Europen gov't will unarm all the law abiding citizens so the criminals can have a party.

so you are saying if europeans beat their children there wouldnt be a columbine, an alabama, vatech over there like none of these happened here....... oops i thought that beating kids was supposed to prevent them from going postal? pity this isn't sparta

show me one scientific thing (survey, study, anything) that backs up what you just said

There are no problem children in this world, only problem parents. When growing up,my 2 brothers and I lived in a house with plenty of guns and no safe.We were taught gun safety at an early age and had caring, strict parents. We were never tempted to solve typical boys issues with guns.We fought regularly, like boys do,with ourselves and other boys at school and in the neighborhood.Never once did fetching a gun ever enter our heads.

The parents of these deranged monsters need to stand co-accused with their evil actions.

Europe is going to do whatever they want to do.

If we are so lucky they might emigrant over the Atlantic and make new homes here in the USA.

Europe sucks (when concerning RKBA)

The media are already screaming concerning the german teenager in Winnenden, that it was all because of the video games, the fact that he was interested in guns and so on.

No bad parenting or just freak-of-nature according to the media...

idiots...

If you look closely, you'll see that that first cartoon was publishes in 1968, same year as the Gun Control Act.

[C]olorado, a year after the 1999 Columbine High School shootings, made it a felony to buy a firearm for another person who should know the transaction is illegal ...

 Is this on top of the existing federal law in place for 40 years?

As for the others, we all know it will not accomplish jack.

Well, considering that you can't own a gun for self defence (only for hunting or sport) or carry any kind of weapon with you legally, we've been at the mercy of criminals for a long time. The whole notion that a person could defend himself or herself is considered "naive" or "ridiculous" by many. Losing guns isn't going to make things much worse than they are already.

you can't own a gun for self defence

You can, at least here in Switzerland, and also in italy. You can legally use a gun for self defense at home, as long as you respect some proportionality. (not about the means used, but proportionality to the threat- that mean you cannoz shoot a burglar escaping in the back, but if you health or life is threatened...)

some of those measures sound 'reasonable', actually. But like most reasonable things, they start with what you'll willingly accept before they start cramming it down your throat.

here, you cannot carry a firearm without a permit (very hard to get.. you have to proove a possible threat) , but pepper spray are fully allowed.

Our legislators are still morons ! (I guess yours are just supramoronic) ;)

Dang! And I thought we were the land of the free. Looks like Finland is just catching up (sarcasm) :what:

Typical gun grabbers! It is unfortunate that the antis blame guns for a society's problems. It is this same crowd that contribute to the problem by advocating things like drug legalization and victim disarmament. We need to help the Europeans however we can! I disagree with the view held by some gun owners I know who told me we should mind our business and leave Europe to the antis but No Man is an Island today. If the antis succeed in places like Switzerland it won't be long before they try to bring their BS over here!!!

This one jumped out at me. Is it somehow easier for someone to kill himself with an auto or pump than with any other type of gun? I don't intend to be crass, but it isn't like they're going to need a quick followup shot.

As for Europe continuing to crack down on gun ownership; it is said that insanity is doing the same thing you've always done and expecting different results. This seems like a perfect example of that.

If anything else failed as miserably as gun control, it would be dropped and something else would be tried. When gun control fails, governments just implement more gun control.

Don't you mean OUR faces? After all we are the ones paying for the social experiment of liberalism...

they are grasping for staws.
in switzerland, we have about 50-60 murders per year that involve firearms, most gang related
there simply is not enough gunrelated violence in switzerland that you can campaign on Violence alone, so they have to include suicides and the general "fear of guns" to not look totaly silly.
