When I was learning to shoot the guy teaching me (my grandpa) was terrified that I would drop every new gun I shot b/c I would be overcome with the recoil. It never happened to me but it must of happened to some people... Ever happen to you?

Never happened to me, but I have seen new shooters drop a gun after the shot. Personally, I don't think recoil caused it. I think fear and reaction to the noise/recoil caused it....I can see why grandpa could be apprehensive. I know I have a gun or two I certainly wouldn't dropped in the gravels.

Nope, I have seen women at the range drop a handgun or two just out of pure fear after firing the first round. With laughing husbands and boyfriends standing behind them lol.

Think I was 6 years old(?) and had been bugging dad all day during a dove hunt to shoot his 16 gage shot gun; my BB gun just wasn't cutting it! Finally he gave in and I kinda tumbled off the slope of a tank dam as I fell backwards on my butt! I did not drop the gun though! Needless to say it was at least six months before I asked to shoot the thing again..Jeez I was hard headed!

A six year old kid could do many things that one would not expect an older person to do while shooting a new gun for the first time. Your grandfather was mulling over anything that could possibly happen to his new gun when being shot by a 6 year old kid who had no experience with the gun. I don't blame him. Personally, I would not let a 6 year old shoot a new gun of mine. Too many bad things could happen in that scenario. Let's face it, if 6 year old kids were responsible enough to shoot guns then there would be 6 year old gun permit holders walking around with guns strapped to their hips. :uhoh:

No, but I caught one once...

First time my first wife shot my Winchester Model 59 12 gauge I was standing to her right and a little behind her. I prepared her for what she was going to experience the best I could but it got away from her just the same. Golden glove award, I was right there in the perfect location and nabbed it.

She didn't get hurt or scared and we both just laughed our butts off.

6 year old farm kids are not 6 year old city kids.
I was driving the pickup in the pasture pulling and old cycle mower that dad had to ride for cutting hey by the time I was 7. Had to stand up in the floor and put both feet on the clutch to get the old Ford pickup out of gear; hard spring but it worked. This is not a brag type comment just the facts. Many got their drivers license when turning 14 and most of us country folk had our own shot gun by age of 9 or 10 with strong warnings of not shooting the livestock. .22s were harder for us to get because of their range and the possibility of ricochets. Different times for different folks for sure; guess I am just old but until my dying day I will be thankful for my childhood of doing real things and not being glued to a T.V. or mommas skirt. Has anyone ever been outside this country and seen 8 year olds running a shop and taking cash while mommy or father worked someplace else; not totally uncommond in other countries.

Been there and done that. Got my first shotgun, single shot 16 ga, when I was 8 years old. Also was driving in the hay fields when I was 7yrs old. Didn't get my first pickup till I was 12 yrs old.

Yeah they are. There's some tough as nails city kids out there too. sorry, but your chosen demographic isn't entirely made up of supermen. >.O

Yes sorry for the implied demographic remark, it was not meant that way.

When growing up if we wanted to take our dates out for a nice evening we would go to Dallas. If we wanted to get our butts beat we went to FT. Worth!! Seemed to work that way!!

City kids knew where to go and stay out of or find trouble in their domain; many were certainly better trained fighters in a street brawl.

We country bumpkins knew how to hunt and fish and had tougher hands where stickers never seemed to get stuck. It is just a matter of doing what you have to do in the environment you grow up in.

I didn't drop it but; when I shot a 410 dbl barrel pistol (cheap) that a good buddy of mine STILL has, I lit off one chamber then looked at his smiling mug and put it down. Ouch! I swear the grip is the size of my thumb.

If the shooter drops the gun, the person responsible for their training is likely at fault.

Plug and muff first time shooters.
Start them out with .22's.
If the first time shooter is your SO, have someone else take them out for their first range session.
Keep the shotguns in the safe, and the videocameras put away.

you can screw up a new shooter in other ways, but you have to work at it if you follow the advice outlined above.

Does shooting a Mosin Nagant 91/30 count? Fired one round and the muzzle got a gravel bath. Luckily the thing was already scratched to hell so it was still fine.

Watched a guy load up a Remington 1100 with slugs and attempt to shoot it one handed at a public range with predictable results. Nothing like watching a guy drop a loaded shotgun with the safety off to make you want to leave in a hurry.

I've never seen anyone with even a bit of proper training in handling firearms drop one, unless they are doing something really irresponsible.

I've never understood the sadistic pleasure people get out of handing some poor unsuspecting person a powerful gun and filming the result, or those that laugh at the clip when loaded on youtube.

Buddy of mine shot my Mosin M44 with one hand. Pretty hilarious to watch. He held it up just about find but the recoil was too shaky and he just dropped it.

Never happened to me, I have had a couple knock my hat off. Those are my favorite!:D

I tried one of those shots last year while duck hunting, not only did I miss but it felt like the trigger guard broke my finger but I didn't drop the gun, and that's the important part.

I had a 454casull that one of my employees asked to shoot. He held the gun with one hand and sqeezed off a round before I could stop him. As designed it rolled back in his hand and his arm also came back allowing the gun barrel to strike him between his eyes, and the gun came loose from his grip, tumbled over his head to the dirt. He wondered why my "45 Long Colt" could kick that hard. I told him it was a 454casull.

Almost. I was shooting a .308 Contender pistol for the first time. I was going to hold it [tightly] with one hand like I do a magnum revolver and the guy that offered to let me shoot it suggested using a 2-hand hold. Gun came up and tried to hit me in the forehead. I was ready for the recoil the next shot, or so I thought, and the same thing happened.

I thanked the man and gave him back his gun before I started flinching, but those 2 shots were kind of fun.
