Took apart my SW 422 (out of sheer boredom I guess). Removed the grips to wash them and ended up tinkering around with it. Anyway the sear pin fell out when I pressed down the hammer.

I tried to realign and put it back but no luck. The way the gun is designed makes it extremely hard for me to see in the mag well and I can't for the life of me get it functional again. On top of this the sear spring also slipped out somehow as I tried to realign the sear with a screw driver. I might could fix if I could get the side plate off but so far haven't figured out how yet and I'm afraid of screwing it up even more.

After several hours of futile repair attempts I put it back together best I could and put it up. I put the pin and sear spring in a box if I ever decide to get it fixed. But I don't think I'll be shooting this gun for quite sometime if ever.:( Man I feel so stupid.

Post this in the gunsmithing forum. Someone will help you.

Is this it? To remove the sideplate I'd first remove the cylinder. Remove the screw just in front of the word "Airweight" and keep it separate. Open the cylinder and then slide the cylinder/crane assembly forward.

To remove a Smith sideplate you remove all the sideplate screws. Remove grips also.

Then take a wooden handle, such as you would find on a hammer, and "rap" the grip frame on the right side of the frame. That should dislodge the sideplate.

The 422 is an accurate fun little .22 auto that was made by S&W.I have one.DEFINATELY take it to your local gunsmith for reassembly. The sear is no place for a novice to be messing around,if you want it to work safely...and dude, don't feel dumb, you were trying to do a GOOD thing.just take it in and get it fixed. You should have seen me the first time I tried to reinstall the slide, before I found out about the trick of useing a .22 empty to compress the spring to get the take-down key back in.yeah....take that one to the 'smith.

Call S&W service at 1-800-331-0852 and make arraingements to send it to the S&W repair center.

Then, Don't do that again!
