Right now several companies are building Polish Tantal rifles. Easily one of the best 5.45 AK variants ever made.

Here is what you need to know.

You want one built on a DCI receiver (probably the best domestic AK receiver made). The ones I got for myself also had G2 fire control parts.

You want one where the left side selector (similar to a Galil) actually engages the safety. On some of the cheaper builds the receiver isn't cut for the left side selector and it is completely omitted, on some other builds it is for show only and serves no actual function.

Make sure they are using a Tantal folding stock (uses a paddle release, rather than a push button like the Romanian folding stocks). You can see the paddle lever in the above photo. Unlike most Romanians, you can actually engage this lever with your thumb only. Some builders are keeping the Polish stocks and sticking Romanian folders on their "Tantals."

For those who are wondering, yes these do accept standard fixed buttstocks.

And of course you want one with a bayo lug left intact, a few builders are making them without the bayo lugs and correct bayo brake.

Expect to pay around $650 for a good one, though I have seen them sold for $750 and up.

And with Bulgarian, Russian and Polish military 5.45x39 in 1,080 spam cans selling for about $150 or so you will want to stock up. Prices were almost twice that last year.

The number of Polish Tantal kits out there is limited so these probably won't last long, and I don't think it is likely that any more kits will be imported.

That is personal preference.

The original military Tantals had a modified AK system in which the commonly found selector lever (normal right side) only turns the safety on and off.
The left side selector was a 3 position lever which -in the military model- switches from single shot, to 3 round burst, to full auto.

I like my switch to rotate to the 3 positions as it's more historically accurate, and . .

I also don't think it has the leverage to operate the safety.

Steyr AUG... Can you PM me with a source on these? Am looking at the Interarms WZ-88, not sure if it is built on a quality receiver.

Also these come in either folder or fixed stock variants.

Thanks!

Mine will engage it but won't disengage it.

And I agree it is a preferrence issue. I was mainly pointing out that on some it is a non functional lever.

What specific firearms by specific manufacturers do you recommend? Thanks."

I'm trying to NOT self promote here. ;)

Suffice to say if you go on Gunbroker and search "Tantal" you will find a familiar picture. Or if you can't find that, my email always works.
