EvilBay sells MiG Fighter Jets, Shuns Guns!

Am I the only one who's suspicious that "inkgirle" owns a Mig 21? This is someone who in 5 years with an ebay account has never sold anything and had 54 purchases. Ebay doesn't say what the purchases were, but some of the sellers were "fragranceconnection" and "advancecellular1". I bet this sale turns out to be a hoax.
 
$25k for a jet airplane? ANY jet airplane is worth many times that. I think the chinese business man got taken for ride on that.
 
The Mig has not guns, so isn't a problem.

Why can't you respect their rules? When people come to your house, whose rules do you enforce, yours or theirs? Yours, of course. After all, it is your house.

Do you have a better online auction where you allow guns to be sold?
 
Please see the above link. Apparantly Ebay in it's infinite wisdom allows a Chinese businessman to purchase a used MiG-21f (from an American seller) but have deleted seller's accounts for trying to sell hangun parts!

Well, the FAA has declared that particular aircraft to NOT be a "weapon" any longer so it's OK to sell, fly, do whatever with.

Get the ATF to state that an AR-15 is no longer a "firearm" and you're good.

F-14's are still on the no no list, but I did read about a guy that applied to register an F4 Phantom he built up from parts. Not sure where that one went.

There have been lots of ex military jets declared "non weapons" by the FAA.
Some are shocking....
Besides loads of WWII stuff, the OK list includes

A4 Skyhawks
Most older MiGs
F104 Starfighter
T-38's and it's fighter brother the F-5
F100 Sabre

ETA: The F4 Phantom was approved, so they are OK now too..

Oh if I only had a few million spare change......
 
Add at least one F-86 Sabre to the list. I've also seen 1 F-4 in private ownership at an airshow.

Value is a pretty subjective thing. The plane has no real military value, so it is worthless to governments. For private citizens the plane has no purpose beyond entertainment, and the fuel and maintinence costs on such a thing are enough to make even a rich man cringe. When it really comes down to it these planes are pretty close to being totally without value to anyone.
 
The Collings foundation's F-4 required an act of congress in order for them to restore it to flying condition because it was a US Military combat aircraft. see http://www.collingsfoundation.org/tx_f-4dphantom.htm any combat aircraft that the US military takes ownership of either for it's own use or to be provided to a foreign country through the Military Assistance Programs has to be demilitarized when it's no longer needed. I think this is true of any aircraft built after 1960 or so. there are a few that slip through like the F5 and some Cobra helicopters, but for the most part they don't want US military aircraft in the air in civilian hands.

I'm confused.

One poster at TFL had a thread in which he complained about a holster being removed from eBay. He claimed eBay stated it was against their policy.

And now I hear this:

As you can see below (go to eBay and search for "gun parts"), there are 8,640 different gun parts available on eBay. I know that at least two of these parts are a stock & extractor for a Marlin 336 which I'm thinking of bidding on.

Aside from 8,640 "parts", they have 261 gun accessories, 45 listings for optics, and 20 listings for reloading equipment.

Am I to believe that eBay has simply missed all 9,377 forbidden items?

I am new to eBay, and was suprised to find people upset with eBay after finding that they have many many items listed.

The MiG 21 is completely obsolete in a modern combat environment. Yes, you can, with a lot of $$$, upgrade it to kindasorta do what modern strike aircraft do, but you're then putting a lot of $$$ into a decades old airframe. I don't see any indication that the modernizers have been able to overcome three of the aircraft's primary limitations, however; short range, small payload and limited space for on-board radar.

Now, will it still do well in third-world hell-holes? Sure. But put it up against a competent opponent and it will be a seal-clubbing.

Even so, this aircraft is a shell...it will fly (maybe), but has no military capability. You could arm a Beech Bonanza as easily as you could arm this thing.

I saw it last year at the Selfridge Air Show. It was quite disappointing. I expected much more out of what was once the unsurpassed king of air show airplanes. We didn't even get a thunderous high-speed pass.:(
