Ok, the dies I use have a removable expander ball in the FL sizing die. I only use it to partially resize my brass usually but I was wondering if I NEED to have the expander installed. What benefits does it provide and what would happen if I removed it?

In a non-bushing FL die it expands the neck back to a size that'll accept a bullet, after the die skooshes the neck in...
Chuck it into a drill and polish the expander ball, or replace it with a carbide ball. Or replace the die with a bushing style, the expander ball can tweak the caseneck out of alignment. But you probably will have problems seating bullets if you toss it. Lube helps, too.
