I'm right on the edge of jumping into reloading for .45 Colt. I'm not into cowboy shooting, but a .45 Colt Rossi m92 has my eye, and may be about the ideal close-range scrub and woods gun for the way I hunt.
Problem is, I'm thinking about high-volume powders (for safety/ consistency) and a lot of people seem to like Trail Boss for relatively mild lead .45s, but the velocity figures are all for longish revolvers.
Does anybody have experience loading Trail Boss for 16-20" carbines? What I'm looking for is an idea of how much barrel length increases velocities with this particular powder, and whether 16 or 20 is a better length for 250gr hardcasts at 1000 fps or so...

I load TrailBoss in .45 Colt for my Marlin 1894CB. It's very, very accurate with my loads, but I'm shooting a 200 gr. RNFP cast bullet through mine.

Hope this helps.

Fred

I use Trail Boss to reload for my brother's 2 Winchester lever guns, an 1873 and a 1892, both chambered in .38-40. Both of these rifles have 20" barrels and 5.0 grns of T/B works very well for them pushing a 180grn LRNFP boolet, very accurate. I don't have a chrony so all I have to go on for vel is what is listed in the manuals which is 800-900fps. I will say the only thing I don't like is that it's a little sooty but I'm sure that's because it is a low pressure load/powder. It doesn't seem to hurt it's accuratecy and it cleans up easily.

The only carbine loads with Trail Boss I am using these days are for the 45-70 for trap door use and they compare as better than the black powder loads they replace as far as accuracy goes. I have no crony these days as I shot it a while ago.
