I have a 20" barrel in my Rossi 92 and I'm wondering if anyone has gotten the velocity from a 250 gr cast bullet packed with 5.8 grains of Trail Boss. I don't have a chrony and I can't find any data with that powder through a rifle.

LivewireBlanco,

With a fast powder like Trail Boss, you are unlikely to get any velocity boost in a rifle length barrel. Consider using a slower powder such as 2400 or 4227. Just MHO.

So my understanding is that with Trail Boss powder I should expect velocities for my rifle close to what is published for my revolver?

Oh, you would get a little more velocity, but to really take advantage of your rifle's long barrel you need to use a slower burning rate powder.

I figured it'd be pretty slow. I was just wondering out of curiosity and seeing if anyone had actually measured it. I usually use Unique with 45 Colt but I'm giving TB a go with some light 38 spl loads and figured I'd give it a whirl in my 45 as well. Thanks!

I know you still get another 300-400fps with faster powders like Unique but have no idea what you'll gain with Trail Boss.

You should get at least 150 fps gain with fast powders in a .45 Colt carbine.
Looking at Lyman data for a cast 250 grain LFP loaded with Red Dot shows that a 16" 1894 gains about 165 fps over a 7.5" Blackhawk. Trail Boss should be comparable to Red Dot for speed.

I shoot a H&R single shot .45 Colt carbine and estimate an extra 150 fps when using Trail Boss, and +250 fps for Unique or Universal.
