I'm wondering what everyone's experience is with Weatherby rifles. They seem like the top of the line production rifle and a nice addition to my collection and hunting set up. In particular, I'm interested in learning about the Mark V rifles, especially the long action (30-06) models. Can anyone comment?

Thanks for your help guys,

Kev

I have a 1970-production Mark V in .30-'06. Made in Germany. 26" #2 profile barrel.

I didn't like the original trigger, so I replaced it with a Canjar.

I tweaked the forearm bedding a bit; free-floated and then shimmed at the front end. About a five-pound pull to allow insertion of the shim.

Early days, I could see better. Ten-shot groups of 1-1/4 MOA were normal. Five-shot groups of some 3/4 to 7/8 MOA were common. (100-yard range)

In 1997 I finally decided to buy some of this copper-remover bore cleaner, and worked it over pretty good. I'd put close to 4,000 rounds through it, although about half were "plinker" loads.

I did a bunch of reloading in preparation for an antelope hunt. First crack out of the box, I got a three-shot, half-MOA group. And, one shot, one antelope. :)

I later built a 500-yard range. I haven't used it much, but I got two four-shot five-inch groups with Sierra 165-grain HPBT bullets. I shot a relatively quick ten-shot string of 180-grain Sierra SPBTs. I called two fliers during the string; the other eight were in a six-inch group.

And Ol' Pet ain't for sale, either.

I don't have a 500 yard range, and my eyes aren't what they used to be either. Still the two I own, an Accumark in 300 Weatherby, and the SVM in 22-250 are MOA rifles with factory ammo. Federals, and Weatherby in the Accumark and Winchester Supreme in the SVM. CDNN has a big sale on them last I looked, and if I was in the market for another one that's where I'd purchase it. I paid alot more for each rifle than what they are asking.

I have one of the Wby Vanguard's in .300 Wby and it is pretty good for the price, I've also owned a Mark V in .300 Wby and still don't know why I sold it. I would like to get one of the 22-250 varminter's... My experience with the brand has always been good, as I know several people who own one or two... But I've never heard anyone say anything bad about them...

Excellent rifles

but don't expect sustained MOA from the bench. These are hunting rifles. The barrels are slim and heat after a few rounds. Let it cool and your rifle will toss lead where you want it once again.

Older Mark V's are great - with muzzle break very loud. 300 WM ammo and components for reloading are common and no more expensive than Ultrmag's and WSSM's.

My "#2 Profile" barrel is a medium-weight sporter. Most Wby tubes are rather skinny.

I guess that's why the factory makes its claims using three-shot groups, as any more shots than that will definitely cause the usual opening-up of a group that comes with heat.

However, for a hunting rifle, the most important part of the deal is that the first shot from a cold barrel always goes to the same point of aim.

Love It Love It Love It

I recently purchased a Weatherby Vanguard SUBMOA in .308 and LOVE IT. Feels very comfortable and shot .75 MOA out of the box.

My next rifle will most likley be another Weatherby.
