Well this is interesting...

Since 1963 I used #11 Remington, Navy Arms, and some Italian made caps, and the German 1075's, and lately CCI's on ALL my revolvers, past and presently owned. For 42 years I've pinched #11's on to my old ASM 2nd Mod Dragoon and was happy as a clam. I bought some CCI #10's and they fit like a glove on it....Guess I was doing it all wrong all those years! They didn't fit any of my other revolvers though....still pinching those #11's on them;)

As to the heated discussion going on......gentlemen, please....I'm just an old man that feels that one must learn something each day to keep the stagnation from forming on the brain so to speak. And I guess its the cop in me to try to keep the peace, but let's be honest, ALL of us have opinions about things. We ALL learn from one another, and most of all, we should respect each other as fellow blackpowder shooters. I'm not taking sides here, but I am asking that you both have a point and even if they differ, let's respect each other as much as we respect our chosen sport of BP shooting huh?

Now if you want me to butt out and go to another forum, ok, I can do that too. I gunsmithed for almost 35 years, yet my degree was in law, not an engineer or a chemist. Most of the weapons I worked on were DA revolvers and autoloaders used in law enforcement, but I did my fair share with my re-enactor buddies on a multitude of BP weapons. Cap size and nipple tapers aside, nothing is truely perfect right? Let's leave it at that...... We can agree to disagree and still be friends.

The defense rests......

Chain Fires

I have slowly came to the belief that chain-fires in percussion revolvers are more often due to POOR FITTING percussion caps rather than not enough lube placed in the chamber mouths of the cylinder.

I went shooting with a friend who had a repro Whitney revolver. He loaded it and "KER-BOOOOOOOOM!" He had a chain fire!

Being an intrepid sort, he reloaded the revolver: "KER-BOOOOOOOOM!"

I asked him if I could examine his revolver. He declined as he was reloading it again. "KER-BOOOOOOOOM!"

By this time, I was standing about twenty feet behind him when he was shooting!

After two or three more chain-fires he somehow managed to blow the loading lever latch off the underside of his barrel. Only after that did he decide to quit shooting-this was fine with me because by then my nerves were frazzled.

I suggested that he get some TRESCO nipples but he said he was happy with the nipples he had! Oh Well, I tried!

Wow, this thread really took off.
I stored the thing without caps on it, had it out for display for family to gawk at on the mantle piece.
I use Remington #10's and DO pinch them prior to fitting, have never has an issue with them. If I do not crimp they will fall off.
I should be off to the range next week to "clean" out the cylinders.
