Out looking at AK's today and handled a couple of Century Romanians (are these WASRs?) for about $449. The stocks were crazy short, both the side folder and the fixed. So this is standard AK length, correct? Is this length also called Warsaw length?

So what would NATO length be, a longer, more standard LOP?

I know I want a longer fixed stock, so would that include Arsenals, and the Lancaster/Vector variety? How about a fixed Yugo?

Thanks for the help.

the warsaw pact stocks are 9 1/4 inches if I remember correctly and NATO stocks are 10 1/2 inches.

I like the warsaw pact stocks. Im about 5'9, and have a stocky frame, but for some reason I shoot better with the shorter stock.

You can purchase aftermarket AK stocks, here is a black polymer NATO set.

They were apparently designed to be fired while wearing heavy layers of winter clothing, so the russians made them shorter to account for the extra clothing. I kind of like the shorter length, can tuck it in nice and close.

The Century Romanians are WASR-10s

LOP with a NATO length stock is about 14"

but then again, LOP with a pistol grip isn't exactly the same concept as with a shotgun.

I'm just a shade over 6' and the NATO stock on my Saiga conversion fits me well.

Short stocks are only a problem if you aim. Just take the rear sight, adjust to to "full power" and fire from the hip. :)

You gotta have "da' switch" for that, Joe. ;)

There's "communist conscript" length, which is the Warsaw standard, and then there's "American sized," which was called NATO to make other countries feel better. I don't know how anyone can use the Warsaw length, it's rather awkward and I'm not that tall.

If you're halfway decent in the world of carpentry, you could make your own. I'm hoping to get another fixed stock AK just to use the furniture as templates then make replacement furniture out of really nice flamed maple and stain it. Eh?
