I've been working on making a bolt handle jig the past couple weeks and finished a few days ago. Figure I would try it out on my Savage BVTS 22. The end result is pretty darn nice and highly functional. I have a couple refinements to make on the jig and my machining process to make the next one better. Thread size I cut was 5/16-24 and the aluminum for the handle is plain old 6061.

Very nice work! I would love to do something like this to one of my Mosins. I don't have to tools or skills unfortunately.

I'm sure if it fits in my jig, doing a bolt handle should not be a problem.

Here are some pics of Mosin bolts:

Their big downfalls are being short and straight out 90 degrees from the action. This can cause problems when wanting to mount a scope as its a 90degree 'throw' and sticks straight up when 'un locked' from the action. I want to keep mine original but can obtain spares relatively easily online. Some sites even offer the service of cutting bending and re-welding a new handle.

Yeah...I see how that could cause issues with optics, lol.

Nice job DSM. I made one for my wife's squirrel rifle, a Savage MK II .22rf. If memory serve me the bolt handle is threaded so I just turned the knob from 308 stainless and Cerakoted it black.

Pretty nice dubble. My bolt handle had a knob on it. I need to pick up some ss stock to make stainless ones.

I do them by cutting off the original knob, then drilling a hole in the shank, turning a threaded stud to slip into the hole and then welding around the shank/stud junction.

Bolt handles for the MN are not that hard, even with out a jig of any kind.
I do the welded type, and I also make ones that are pinned and silver soldered in place on the old bolt handle lug.
Sort of like the ATI bolt on ones, but way more secure and shaped as I want them.
My favorite style is a Spoon Style that has a little sweept back design.
I make the Spoon Style out of 1/4" flat steel cut and filed to shape, or a Dog leged style that uses the original knob welded or screwed on .
It kind of looks like a enfield 1917 bolt handle then.

LAGS: are you able to pm any pics? Those sound cool. As I make progress on my Mosin mod (like getting the Boyd's thumbhole stock and getting the rear sight off) I may start looking for a better bolt. I would never mod the original as I want to be able to return it to its original stock configuration, but I would buy a replacement to be 'improved' for me. As much as I love doing work myself, I have no welder, drill press or even vice right now (soon to be added). This doesn't seem like a saws-all, dremel, and vice grip project lol.

I do something similar, make my own threaded studs, tig weld them on and blend the transition. The results are a very strong joint and a nice clean look. Here are a couple of examples using stainless and carbon steel with Cerakote.
