Extra CCW weapon ammo/mag. yae or nae?

For CCW, I almost always carry either one extra magazine or one extra speed loader / speed strip (depending on gun) using a small pouch in my back pocket. This rule may be violated if I am carrying an NAA Mini, were the reloading process with loose rounds painfully slow- probably best to run away.

For Open Carry, I usually carry two extra mags (semi auto), or one speed loader and/or 12 rounds in folding carrier (revolver).

The probability arguments says:

1. You probably don't need a gun.
2. You don't need a loaded gun as most are just scared off.

But that's looking at the modal event. Do you plan for the more extreme tail of the critical event distribution when:

1. You have a malfunction.
2. You have multiple attackers
3. You shoot badly and run out of rounds

The modal day for most of us predicts why bother to carry.

People think the average, median or mode always happens. The extreme can happen to some and the Black Swan can fly into your mall.

At work, I carry a 4 inch S&W Model 686 with 4 speedloaders, a S&W Model 37 with a speedstrip, a 26 inch S&W collapsible baton, Sabre Red Crossfire pepper spray, an EagleTac P20A2 flashlight, a Remington "Spur" neck knife, and a KA-BAR TDI Law Enforcement Knife (unserrated), and S&W handcuffs.

Off-duty and on the road, I carry a 3 inch S&W Model 13, 4 speedloaders, a S&W Model 37 with 2 speedstrips, the EagleTac P20A2 flashlight, the Remington "Spur," and an old lightweight Shrade lockblade. On occasion, a 4 inch S&W Model 10 substitutes for the Model 13 or the Model 37.

Off-duty and around the house or town where I live, I usually just carry the S&W Model 13, Model 10, or Model 37 with 2 speedloaders, the Remington "Spur," and whatever old pocketknife I pick up.

The bottom line, I suppose is that I usually carry a backup and reloads for everything.

I always carry a spare mag and white light. Can't think of the last time I didn't.

My trainers taught me that the extra mag isn't so much for the extra rounds as it is for dealing with malfunctions. Many (most) malfunctions are ammo/mag related.

With the Shield it's 7+1 in the gun, & 2) 8 round spares. With the 9C it's 12+1, and 1) 17 round spare. With any of the revolvers, I carry 2 extra speed loaders.

My attitude is that no one can make your self-defense choices for you. Everyone should be free to carry whatever they feel is necessary (dumb laws notwithstanding).

I've carried as many as 61 rounds as a plainclothes armed courier, and as few as 15 for EDC. These days the Air Force tells me to carry 30 on duty, and off duty that sounds about right to me. I feel armed well enough with as little as two eight-round mags plus one in the chamber, but I often carry three because why not?

That third mag is sometimes carried off-body, or in the glove compartment, but it's a lot closer than my gun safe at home. As for the primary spare, I'm firmly in the better to have it and not need it camp.

I generally carry a spare in something like a safariland 123 pouch

I prefer my spare mag to sit flat on my belt, generally at 11 o'clock and hidden under my gut. Comfortable and concealable.

Figure that since it doesn't add that much weight and doubles my effectiveness as well as adds a secondary mag in case of malfunction... why not?

Always carry a spare mag, less because I anticipate a running gun fight and more because I'd prefer the means on hand to rapidly deal with a stoppage if everything goes even more pear shaped than it already has if I'm in a gunfight as a civilian.

It's always a good idea to carry a spare magazine/reload. Not for the extended firefight that hardly ever happens and not really for the malfunction clearance, but for after it's over.

The bad guy(s)who ran out the door after you shot him/them (and ran your gun dry) might well come back in when he spots the responding police car(s).

I want a fully loaded gun after the shooting is done....or not done....

Wait, he ran from you but he'll come back for the cops?

What am I missing?

Usually I just carry the loaded handgun only, with no extra ammo, no extra magazines, and no extra speed-loaders.

The latter is a fully legitimate reason, but I could never see myself carrying four pounds of steel to protect myself from what little crime I have a very low risk of encountering.

edit to add: Dude, and pepperspray? Are you in security or law enforcement? Again, I have zero issues with regular guys and girls arming themselves to the teeth, I just would never haul all that stuff around myself"

Retired Sacramento P.D. I have packed the gear since I was 22 I am now 67. It just becomes a habit.

I have one of those but barely use it. Some of my firearms have grip extensions which won't fit in that (like the 17 round SR9c mag) but ironically double stack .40 fits. My .45 double stack mags won't fit either. I think that mag pouch was more designed for a single stack 1911.

My views on this subject are a matter of record. Which makes them neither right or wrong...just my views.

That said, I am more than a bit disappointed at the tone taken by many respondents. The whole "I do it this way, and if you don't, you are wrong and stupid" mindset is not very THR.

He asked an objective question, and was bombarded with subjective responses.

You do recognize the difference, yes?

Subscribing, and looking forward to objective responses...

I have never carried extra ammo on my person. I do not anticipate getting into the shootout at the OK Cotrral and believe a 7 round 9mm (Kahr PM-9) is adequate for defensive purposes.
