Eye protection

Most ranges consider the glasses that I use suitable eye protection, but they recommend I get some protection to wear over the glasses. Since I have heard it from multiple sources, I am asking for your help.

Looking for recommendations on affordable eye protection for someone to wear over glasses. Clear or yellow, whatever works best in your opinion, and where should I buy, online or at sports authority, etc.

I can't help you with a recommendation on what to wear over street glasses but the next time you buy new glasses please consider getting a pair of prescription safety glasses.

I use prescription safety glasses, with hard side shields, every time I shoot. They have saved my vision at work and at the range more than once. They are well worth the price.

I only wear my glasses and have never had trouble. My glasses come pretty close to the brow so there's really not much getting past them.

My wife actually had an extracted case go behind the lens (OUCH!) of her glasses.

She just started using something like this:

Your US-manufactured prescription glasses should be constructed from shatterproof glass or composites. They're all you need unless you want amber or grey lenses for different lighting conditions.

I would recommend that you get a special pair made in amber if you want low light clarity. You can choose a sports design like wraparounds or even goggles-style.

If you want to go 'cheap' your only real choice is the lab-style of goggles that fit over everything. Hey, Roy Orbison got away with that look.

Just about every range and gun shop I've been to sells cheap clear plastic eye protection that fits over my glasses. These cover over the top and will prevent hot brass from going in the eye better than glasses alone.

I think I paid $3-4 for the last pair. That and a cap with a brim and you are good.

how much does a decent pair of prescription safety glasses go for (including estimate for lenses) I will buy an cheap over-pair, but for long term, it might be a worthwhile investment to buy safety glasses

My last frames cost around $120. The lenses, well, that's a different story. I'm an old guy, with bifocals, and I also bought photo grey, transition, lenses. Total cost for me was just under $400. I prefer the Titmus brand which are a little pricey. There are other brands so it will pay to shop around or ask your eye doc.

However, as I mentioned, safety glasses have saved my vision. $400 is expensive but it's a lot cheaper than a glass eye......

yea im gonna go with the cheap stuff, 5-10 buck eyewear that goes over my current pair.

I can't drop that much into a set of safety glasses, I would rather buy another gun lol

If you hunt / paintball / Hogan's alley, you might want to consider prescription racquetball glasses or racquetball overglasses
(Amazon.com - Ektelon Quantum Over-Glasses Protective Racquetaball Eyewear for example) or paintball glasses.

Hoppe's safety glasses are just fine. I carry them in my range bag for guests (I wear prescription safety glasses). They fit over glasses. I've seen them in stores for about 5 bucks.

Try Wiley-X glasses that have R/X inserts. You just go to an optical shop, get a set of R/X lenses ground for them, and you're good to go! The only caveat is to ensure you get anti-glare/ anti-reflection coating on the inserts so that there will be no visual conflict between the outer lenses & the inserts and make double sure the optical center of the inserts are properly calibrated. I have a pair, they are great ! I use them on duty.
