Hey guys, I have a general question for you guys...I am an avid shooter, trader, etc, primarily in semi-auto pistols, shotguns, rifles, etc...not in Black Powder...I acquired this little beauty in a trade, and took a shot on it (regardless if it is worth $100 or $1,000 I came out good in the trade)...but I do have a few questions...

1: Is it a decent revolver?
2: What is the approximate value?
3: Are they a desirable brand/quality?

Cabellas sells these new so you can get an idea of the value from their web cite.

Yeh, it is a good quality BP cap and ball firearm...... a reproduction of an original ...

It appears to unfired? I highly doubt it...(and it wasn't trades as unfired)...just saying it is SUPER clean, and everything functions excellent...all the nipples are clean and clear...just trying to decide what to do with it...

I don't mind shooting it, that just means that I have get powder, caps, balls, etc, etc...the price is what I was thinking...plus I have a Leather Holster for it +1

...these guns go on-sale occasionally and I assume that is an indication of the lack of high market demand. However, Pietta guns are very nice and their QC is generally very good...

Cabalas just had a sale on the non-stainless version of this gun a few weeks ago at $179 a copy.

I've got the blued version of the same gun. Overall its a lot of fun. I paid $189 for mine which is a sale Cabelas runs every now and then but the stainless version commands more of a price premium (I'm too lazy to check just how much of a premium at the moment - it's on their site :)).

Lots of fun. I shoot mine with .454" balls and have been using Hodgdon Triple Seven. Shoots very clean. Suprisingly low recoil too. Just judging by how much powder goes into every cylinder + the caliber I was expecting a hand cannon the first time I fired it, but it cracks off with a simple thud and way less recoil than even a 9mm.

Looking at the sale Grafs has been running on the "SCHUETZEN' black powder they sell ($13 per pound), I've been tempted to buy 5-6 lbs of the "real stuff" to put through mine :D.

MGgordon,

DOes the 25/cs mean you have to buy a case of 25 to get those prices perpound? How much does the haz mat fee on BP run?

Just curious.

Also is that Remington clone Stainless or is it nickle or chrome?

The pictures were not good enough to tell when it was made/proofed.

In the past Pietta had some quality issues. Current production is quite good. My personal experience has been that I've seen quality issues relatively common in their brass frame revolvers, occasionally in steel (not Stainless) and never anything significant in the stainless revolvers I have held. So I'd say the quality is likely quite high. Value threads always seem to end up in an argument of some saying more and some saying less, but if you came out in the trade at what you think was a $200 or less value (which it sounds like you did) I think that was a no brainer on your part.

congratulations!

Generally speaking, (there are always exceptions) my experience has been that with nickle plated revolvers the trigger guard is also typically plated. When I see a brass trigger guard, my money is on it being Stainless, not Nickle.

Good thing we aren't betting, that way I can't loose.

I think you should sell it and the holster to me for $100.00
Please just don't shoot it. If you do you will never sell it.

Let's see...It is stainless, I will get some better pics of the proof marks...

as for selling it for $100...na, I think I can do better than that...and so could YOU! I would however I am not opposed to other trades...prefer semi-auto handguns...I'm in Alabama JFY!!!!

I've had two SS Pietta Remingtons like yours. Both had problems with chamber/barrel alignment so I sold them and got a pair of Ubertis. The SSs I had were made some years ago. If you would look at the markings on the frame there is a small square box with usually two letters inside the box to indicate the year of manufacture. Tell us the letters and we'll look it up for you. If it is a recent gun the odds are pretty good it's a good one. I also have two SS Euroarms guns that are significntly smaller in heft than the Piettas. Your gun is probably fine. A used SS Pietta ought to fetch $200-$250 if in great shape. just my 2c

Pietta had a few issues years back, but the now make very solid BP guns. I have a "Traditions-brand Navy Colt" that is a Pietta-made and is a good shooter.

guilty as charged-after a closer look,I just had to....

And to think I almost spent the money on a couple of those Pedersoli "Flobert" Guardian derringers yesterday.
I've been wanting a stainless '58 since I lucked into the Cabelas sale last month and bought one of those 5-1/2" barrel blued Pietta '58s.
Caleb sent me some more "details" photo as asked for and I was convinced that it was the one to fill that stainless steel gap in the collection.
Now I'm waiting out Cabelas back order to bring me the "fluted" 1860 that I bought for my Big50 last week and I might be about done gathering BP revolvers. Hah!
