Please help us figure out what this gun is. It appears to be older. Pics explain it better than I can!

FN-manufactured Mauser 98. It could be a commercial manufacture, but most likely is a sporterized FN military contract rifle. The stampings on the metal and wood (especially the metal under the barrel) will usually tell if it's commercial or was accepted into a military arsenal.

Is there a crest of some kind on the top of the receiver ring (front of the action where the barrel screws in)?

+1 on the Mauser 98. My Israeli Mauser is an FN so it could be a military arm.

there is some kind on small insignia stamped there...looks like an 'a' with a small circle around it, or maybe a three fingered something...it's really small

On the top of the action, is there any sort of crest?

there is something on the bolt lever, it is very small. it looks like a lion standing on it's hind feet with the initials 'pv' below.

The ELG on the right side of the barrel by the receiver ring is a Belgian proof mark, as far as I know. The PV insiginia is something that I've seen a couple of times on FN rifles that were rechambered for the commercial market. Does the barrel have any caliber markings on it (e.g 7x57, 8.57, 30-06)?

ok, can't find a caliber marking anywhere. the 30-06 appears to be the right diameter but is too long.
also, the serial number is stamped on the barrel with the crest and again about 2" away on the reciever.

Sounds like a 7.65x54 Mauser round, but you'll need a gunsmith to do a chamber casting to make sure.

my Hubbie got it for $100. Did he get a deal or did he get taken?

It depends on the amount of work y'all want to invest in it and how you intend to use it. If you want a shooter, you will probably have to invest some money into it to have a gunsmith check it out and make sure that it's safe to fire. If you want it for other purposes (decorative, collecting) then it was not a bad deal at all.

FN Mauser 98's are very nice rifles - excellent steel, good construction. It just seems that your example needs a little TLC.

yeah, it was a friends granpa's. i don't think he was able to do much as he got older, and his collection suffered. he did have some nice stuff, my hubbie came home drooling!

i found a rifle in the attic of the house i just bought,

i found your post to "shoe in97" from 2006 and thought you could help.

in front and on top is and oval which must have had an emblem inside, but is indistinguishable
