A friend of mine just purchased a S&W 686 and wants to shoot factory ammo - 125gr - jacketed - 38 Special +p’s for practice. He already has some factory HD ammo. What brand ammo do you recommend for practice and where can he purchase these at the lowest price?

Walmart is always a pretty good place to start as most gun shops have difficulty matching their pricing. Buy name brand ammo. Winchester White box (as it is commonly called) will be the cheapest. Ammo prices have increased substantially in the last two years or so. I would shoot regular 38spl ammo to practice and then shoot both 38spl+p's and 357 mags as time and your budget permits.

walmart+1 either winchester white box or remington umc
sometimes midway has sale prices on case lots.also sportsmansguide and cheaperthandirt

I'm guessing that he wants to shoot/practice the 125 grain .38's in his 686 because he will be using 125 grain loads in .357 for carry or home defense.
They would hit to the same point of aim.
I'd check out some online ammo stores and load up with what ever good deal you can find. Buy in bulk.
Most none standard .38's such as 125 grain can be almost as expensive as .357's.
