Fair Offer for Mosin

I found a Mosin Nagant 91/30 in a gunstore yesterday and was wondering what it is worth.It is missing the top of the stock and the stock has what looks like a duffel cut on it. The front sight is a blade with no globe around it. Receiver is marked 1936 Tula. All numbers are matching except for the bolt. Bore seems good and overall I would rate it as fair. Tag says $110 but the guy told me to make an offer on it. Does $80 out the door sound good or is that ripping me or him off.

Given the prices of the Nagants (whole rifles and not ones with missing pieces) I'd say hold out. I got an all matching, hex reciever 1936 91/30 for $125 after tax. Accurate as all heck. But unless it has some markings that make it more then you standard rifle, I'd pass on it. But again this is just my opinion. A blade front site, not a post, missing globe, duffel cut... could probably find a better specimen for the same price.

I doesn't have an import mark on it which makes it is a bring back if I am not mistaken.

Did you notice any SA markings on the rifle?

Around here, Russian referb hex receievers sell for about $129.99. A private seller was recently selling a Finn captured 91/30 with an original Russian front sight for $100; but it had a wrist repair on the stock. $110 sounds reasonable if you like the rifle.

In CT, russian refurb 91/30's sell for about $129 +tx. I recently looked at a Finn Capture 91/30 that had the Russian globe front site, and wrist repair (major), that the private seller wanted $100 for. He said that's what he paid for it.

The receiver was Tula marked. I don't think it was a hex receiver even though it was clearly marked 1936. The front sight looks kinda like the one in the pic but without the middle piece. Plenty of number on it but if it was an issued gun it should have been rearsenaled at least once. It did not have an import mark, but did have "made in USSR" stamped on it.

Go ahead and offer $80 on it. If that doesn't do it, raise your offer. Sounds like an interesting specimen. Unfortunatly, many of the mosins around here at pawn shops and such have been bubba'd (no, a bubba'd M44 is not worth $230, even if it is a "rare russian rifle")

$110 is a little high, but it's not an absolute ripoff. If you can get it for $80 you are getting a deal. Last I checked the C&R price on them was between $70 and $80 and that doesn't include shipping or the chance to inspect the rifle before buying. For a nice rifle in a gun store I am usually willing to pay about $30 over the price that they're selling for online. For that I figure that I get to inspect the rifle first and I don't have to pay for shipping and the dealer makes a reasonable profit on the deal.

When you say duffel cut, do you mean it appears to be two pieces of wood attached in the middle with finger joints? If so it is most certainly a Finn capture and is worth the money. The blade is likely a Finn high sight used to properly zero the rifle. If the wood is stained a dark color and there's an SA stamp on the rifle that's proof positive. But there's not always an SA stamp. Also check for little pip marks from their hardness testing around the receiver.

That is part of the import mark. If you look around the crown of the barrel you may see some faint lettering from the importer.

EDIT--it could also be a Spanish CW rifle, as noted below. That would be quite a coup!

Sounds too high to me for an example with importers markings. Tula is of course the preferred arsenal, but it just doesn't sound like a good example.

I paid 95 complete for mine at auction. Still has the original Russian storage tags and the stock is a little rough and its still got a lot of packing grease.

Yeah, given the new information go for it. That's part of the thing I love about Mosins. You can be sitting there looking in the $80 bin and see the usual, but suddenly one just seems a little off kilter and requires some more research

Not to be outdone my girlfriend is talking about a Ruger Valquero in .357 mag. Every time I buy a gun she wants to turn it into an arms race. Since I'm in college this is going to be the last gun for the year or else my friend will run out of room in his safe because he has my guns,her SKS, and his guns in there.
(I am only doing this because I have known him since grade school and we were eagle scouts in the same troop,etc.,etc. you get the idea)
