I've seen a few with a light stamp also.
Looks like a break even trade to me. Well, break even for the OP. I get my Glocks wholesale. I have sold several decent 17's for $600-$700.

I just checked my 17-4. The stamp is legible throughout, but it is ever so slightly deeper on the left edge than on the right. If it was a light stamp, I could see it fading out to the right.
Curiously, mine is on the left (cylinder swing out) side of the gun, not on the right. Any S&W aficionados out there that can explain?

Through the years, they have stamped them on one or the other side, bigger, and smaller.
I can't tell you when, or model numbers, without a lot of research tonight.
But I can tell you it's normal to find them on either side, depending on year & model.

I searched the S&W forum, and what you said is correct. There doesn't seem to be a lot of rhyme or reason as to which side it was applied.

I am going with refinish.
That said - I have never set foot in a gun shop without seeing a bunch of Glocks. If I were in your position I would ask the Smith guy to meet me halfway on the road trip , perhaps come up a bit in the cash using the grips and refinish as bargainig points , and land a classy , excellent shooter.

Have to agree that this gun is refinished and there is no way those are S&W grips.
Something else to consider when doing a trade if you have to drive a long way - I get $0.57/mile when I drive my personal car for business reasons. A 4 hour drive is probably around 300 miles, so figure that you are kicking in an at least an extra $150 on your side for transportation costs.
