Duplicate of an thread that I posted earlier on 1911.org and thought it would be of interest to all concerned.

Apologies to all for my erratic participation the last few days. Too many irons in the fire and not enough time and energy to cope.

First...I need to make everybody aware of a fake magazine that's come to my attention. The ones that I have in hand have the Metalform "M" stamp with the Colt pony logo. They're stainless with a dull brush finish...7-round with a suspiciously familiar bogus wadcutter feed lip design.

A few days ago, 1911.org member EchoBravoKilo offered to let me have 10 Colt/Metalform magazines in appreciation of my efforts there, which is much appreciated. He said that his Commander didn't like them, and that I could have them if I wanted.

The fact that they didn't perform in his Colt was the first red flag. When they arrived yesterday, I immdiately spotted them as fakes due to the differences between them and the real Colt contract Metalform magazines. I'll contact Metalform tomorrow and send them a magazine to examine.

The other issue was that they appeared to have decent springs...which is odd because the bogus magazine producers generally use the cheapest components that they can get...and this may provide a way to nail this guy.

(I have a suspect in mind. If anyone picks up on it, please don't announce it in an open forum. Don't wanna warn him what's comin'.)

Upon disassembling the magazines, it jumped out at me that the springs are dead ringers for Check-Mate's proprietary 7-round springs. I'll work with Jackie at CMI to determine if this is fact...and if they can track sizeable spring orders to a certain individual and/or area...they may be able to provide Metalform and Colt with information on whoever is infringing on their copyrights.

I'll try and get a few comparison pictures up soon. Our digital camera has gotten a little hinky recently, so it may not provide enough clarity. We'll see.

This thread will be sticky for a few days so that all may have a chance to see it.

The ones that appear to be identical in design and quality are most often seen for sale on Ebay. The pictures look good...and are usually pictures of the real McCoy. When the magazines arrive, what you have is a boxful of junk.

Do they look anything like these?

I got about 15 of these off EBay about 2 years ago. Some worked, most didnt and they looked fishy from the start. They were all supposed to be stainless, but were obviously some sort of nickle wash, or at least most were. A number were showing some rust. I didnt pay much for them and I got just what I paid for.

AK10...they all appear to be a little suspect, but if they're fakes...they're some of the better ones I've seen. The one on the far left is obviously fake.
Metalform's "M" is square, with dead straight legs. The right-had leg on yours is angled inward and deformed at the foot. It's not as tall and narrow as the counterfit ones that I have...but it's still not Metalform's.

The 8-round "G" marked magazines have some defects that I haven't seen in Colt's OEM 8-round Shooting Stars. A photo taken straight down on the feed lips may provide another clue.

Overall, the bogus magazine tubes are thin and soft...not at all "springy" and too easily deformed to be Colt contract magazines.

The roll marking on the baseplates of the ones that I have don't have clean, sharp edges around the lettering, which is also a giveaway. Metalform's lettering is die-stamped, and is clean and well-defined.

Hopefully, ulflyer can get by here today with a good camera so I can show the differences.

I sent two of the magazines to Metalform and a spring to Check-Mate. So far, they haven't been able to find anything in their records for large spring orders, and they're going to analyze the spring to see it it's theirs.

No word from Metalform yet.

Here's the last E-mail that Metalform sent to me earlier this week.

Johnny,

We received the 2 magazines you sent to us today. They are indeed very
poor excuses for magazines and certainly not made by us. We will also
alert Colt to this situation in an effort to put a stop to it.

Thank you for being on top of this situation and spotting it!

Derek

Metalform has contacted Colt in this matter, and at last report are investigating. While neither company has a major problem with junk magazines...apparently both firms are completely serious about junk magazines that are marketed with a copyright infringement included.

I'll update when I know more.

Hey, Tuner--heard anything more from Metalform yet?

After just recently buying my first 1911, when I went to a following gun show, I made sure to stay the heck away from miscellaneous/similar looking mags, as a "just in case," and got a decent deal on a Wilson Combat instead. Thanks for the heads-up :)

How about these? The SS one sounds like the type Slademark mentioned, but does not have any visible weld mark down the spine. Pretty sure the blued one is OK...(?) I'm not a 1911 guru, and definately not a photographer.

The stainless magazines appear to be Chip McCormick Shooting Star magazines. I would stay away from those, particularly if you have an alloy-framed gun. The devel follower will slide forward under recoil and seriously mar and gouge your feedramp.

I took a look at my magazines and found that I have two that I purchased thinking they were real Colt magazines. They are blue and in place of the "M" have an "O" What is the story on them? Thanks, Jim

Fake Beretta mags...

A few years ago I bought 6 Beretta mags for my 92FS from some online site (can't remember which one) and even though they appeared to be authentic Beretta mags, upon closer inspection I found they were poorly made copies and were passed off as the real thing. I had problems with them and threw them away. Expensive lesson learned...

please elaborate on the chip mccormic shooting star magazines and how they damage feed ramps. also curious if the newer "power mags" are worth the price.

Hello. New member here. I just recieved some magazines from Sportsman's Guide. If you don't read the web page carefully, you'd think you were getting genuine Colt magazines, and some of the "customer" comments make it sound like you're getting the real thing. They even say Colt on the bottom of the mag. Check it out here:

Does this look like a rip off?

I would stay away from those. Reproduction Colt® 7-rd. Mag. is the give-away. They are "reproductions," not the real thing.

Sportmans Guide is notorious for, and very good at the way they word their ads. You really do need to pay attention to the pictures and EXACTLY what they say, and not what you want to hear.
