Let's assume (and we're all hoping) that the AWB sunsets properly this fall and isn't renewed. I've purchased a British L1A1 flashhider an bowie bayonet to have mounted on my rifle when I return home from Qatar, in this event, in lieu of that useless, heavy muzzle brake.

I chose the L1A1 flashhider because the L1A1 was one of very very few FAL variants to have any kind of proper bayonet. The "tubular" bayonet common to the metric variants is just chinsy; the Austrian STG58 didn't even HAVE a bayonet (the Austrians think they're inhumane).

I don't know about South African FAL bayonets, though I think they used an L1A1 style one (as did the Canadians). The German G1 had a proper knife bayonet as well.

However, what I'd really like is a custom muzzle device that allowed attachment of all M16 bayonets. There are some cool bayonets out there for the M16 series (the M9, M10, and the custom jobs from Ontario Knife Company).

It's not that I think that I'll ever have a use for a bayonet on my personal rifle, but if you can get one why not?

I could care about bayonets, and like my brake quite a lot actually. But why not? The front bayo ring on the AR series simply fits (sorta loosely) over the largest diameter of the birdcage, which is a 22mm grenade-launcher. If assault rifle features are gone, more of those will be available (the Belgian hider would work fine for this). Then you just need to attach an AR gas block bottom to the barrel at the appropriate point.

Even if it was steel, I'd be leery of welding. Thinking... Presumably you could grind away the rest of the AR gas block (removing the front sight tower and so on) and enlarge the hole for the barrel to fit your barrel (if necessary), then thread the gas tap hole for a set screw. Put it at the right distance, tighten screw, attach grenade-launching flash-hider and lock your bayonet in place.

Stab away!

Choate machine and tool used to make a clamp on bayonet lug that they made to work with their flash hider/front sights for the Mini-14. They worked with the AR-15/M-16 type bayonets. The Steyr Aug's bayonet lug is a clamp-on affair too. Not sure the type that it accepted. There is also another type of Mini-14 slip-on and pin type that the bayonet lug was integral with the flashhider, I think Cheaper than Dirt sold them. There's stuff out there that could be used to get it to work.

I have been looking at a similar idea for my FAL and my AK. I have been thinking that maybe the barrel band style bayonet mount from an M-1 carbine could be modified to work.
