I was considering getting a FAL. I'm aware of only 2 manufacturers of FALs, DS Arms and Entreprise Arms. The DS Arms one looks nice, but is pretty expensive at 1,700 bucks. Entreprise, on the other hand, has 2 models, a "government" model and a "standard" model. The only difference I see is the govt model has a steel handguard. (btw if you haven't noticed yet I want a plain-jane FAL).

Input would be greatly appreciated.

I like the look of FALs, but you owe it to yourself to consider the Scout M1A.
The Bush and MK14 versions are also worthy of your attention.

Entreprise has made remarkable progress in improving the quality of their products. Having said that, it's kind of like saying that a politician has stopped telling as many lies. Sure, they can make some progress, but they had such a long way to go to equal the quality of a DSA or an old Imbel or FN that it's still a noticeable difference. Entreprise is better than Hesse, but they can still be hit or miss sometimes. You will pay more for a DSA but you're getting quality that's worth the money.

I have written to Entreprise several times asking if they were still affiliated with the lawyer Michael Meyer who acted like a first class jerk on FAL Files. Until I got confirmation that they were in no way affiliated with someone who acted like he did, there's no way I'd consider giving them my business. Of course since I already own two DSA rifles I wouldn't consider an Entreprise anyway.

Enterprise makes good guns. DSA makes good guns.

If you order directly from DSA they will quote you a much lower price.

I picked up an STG58 for around 400 dollars under the advertised cost.

I've heard iffy things about Enterprise. Personally, I always go for top of the line because you'll end up spending more in the end if you buy something that needs Fixing. DSA is the way to go.

I don't much about Enterprise, but you pay top dollar for a DSA and you get a top dollar rifle.

The only difference I see is the govt model has a steel handguard. (btw if you haven't noticed yet I want a plain-jane FAL).

If you're planning on shooting many rounds in one sitting, do yourself a favor and don't get the metal hand guards -- or buy some really thick gloves. Those things get painfully hot.

More generally, DSA is the way to go, and like other posters have suggested you shouldn't pay MSRP for one of their rifles, though in the happy new Obama Messiah-ship I suppose that's a possibility.

You might keep yours eyes peeled for a Springfield SAR-48/4800 or a build by either Arizona Response Systems or AZEX.
