OK, Ive decided the first rifle I want to buy (after building my AR) is an FAL.

What I know about the FAL.............................. They look kool  .

I'm gona spend the next few days searching the archives, but if anyone knows of others sources of info or has any info of there own, thanks for the help.

Whats a good name to start with?

DSarms is a bit steep, but they're worth it. If you don't feel like getting the SA58 (the one you most likely looked at), the STG58s are a good bet. They're a couple hundred dollars cheaper, made from austrian parts and some american(I think?) parts.

You can buy cheaper FALs, though. Mostly those from Century, Olympic Arms, ect.

I completely second the DSA STG-58 "kit gun" idea. You can get them new for under a grand, used for about the same price as an AR, and while they're built with surplus parts, they're built with surplus Steyr parts, which are quite good. You cannot get all of the different varitions offered in the SA58 line, but you get a good, milspec rifle at a decent price. Plus, DSA has lifetime service. If it breaks, they'll fix it.

Don't forget Mags which are cheap and readily available,:) and ammo which is not  Prices have gone up and supplies are not as abundant as they once were. Love the FAL have 4 Just sold an IZZY, word of caytion THEY ARE ADDICTIVE lol Part kits are also available $150- $450 depending however Receivers are not as plentiful. Remember for every + ther is a - lol.

My Entreprise (no, that's not a typo) STG-58c was about $650 secondhand, and was a great rifle. Once you buy yours, a good place to do business for accessories and such is Tapco.

$249 InterOrdnance "Excellent" Imbel parts kit
$375 DSA Type I receiver
$120 Tapco compliance & replacment parts
$ 25 new locking shoulder for proper headspacing
-----
$769 Like-new FAL

$??? misc tools & shop supplies (shared among a group)

Got the parts kit at a show - bore was like new. VG kits had moderately rounded lands, and some throat erosion. The "rearsenaled" kits were problematic - some parts over-painted w/o being taken apart - ick.

About 15 hours sweat equity to fully strip, clean, re-barrel, DuraCoat, assemble and adjust. (YMMV)
