I don't want to hijack the "FAL Disappointment" thread, as it has already been hijacked by a .308 versus 7.62 x 51 debate, so...

While I'm waiting for my new DSA SA58 type II metric receiver to come in, I need to think about the rest of the rifle. What parts should be bought new versus using "parts kit" pieces? How much of an imported parts kit do you have to replace anyway to be 922(r) compliant? Is it better to cherry pick parts from a couple sources or to go with new assemblies from places like DSA or gunguyparts.com? Besides the stock and grip, are there any other parts that are worth considering aftermarket over the "originals"?

Start here

falfiles.com

ya will find most of your parts vendors sponsering the site as well as alota stuff in the forsale section, hit the buildit yourself forum for options on meeting 922R there are alota ways to do it legally all a matter of how much ya wanna spend

You have to replace 7 foreign parts with US-made parts if the rifle has a muzzle-device; if not, replacing 6 will do:

§ 178.39 Assembly of semiautomatic rifles or shotguns.

(a) No person shall assemble a semiautomatic rifle or any shotgun using more than 10 of the imported parts listed in paragraph (c) of this section if the assembled firearm is prohibited from importation under section 925(d)(3) as not being particularly suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes.
(c) For purposes of this section, the term "imported parts" are:

(1) Frames, receivers, receiver castings, forgings or stampings
(2) Barrels
(3) Barrel extensions
(4) Mounting blocks (trunions) (FAL equivalent - none)
(5) Muzzle attachments
(6) Bolts
(7) Bolt carriers
(8) Operating rods (FAL equivalent - charging handle)
(9) Gas pistons
(10) Trigger housings (FAL equivalent - lower receiver)
(11) Triggers
(12) Hammers
(13) Sears
(14) Disconnectors (FAL equivalent - none)
(15) Buttstocks
(16) Pistol grips
(17) Forearms, handguards
(18) Magazine bodies
(19) Magazine followers
(20) Magazine floorplates

No more than 10 of these parts may be foreign-made.

What would qualify as a "barrel extension"? Muzzle devices are already on the list.

I just recieved parts for my last build..(yeah right :D) from gunpartsguy.

Here.http://gunpartsguy.com/

Click on the link for "online store" goes to secure site. I ordered my parts last Wednesday and got them this Monday. Been a great guy over the years to do business with.

I ordered the Falcon HTS, charging handle and the Phoenix flash hider.

Haven't decided on a furniture set yet...not sure if I am going to go with DSA stuff (I like the DSA X series butt stock) or wood, Ironwood designs has brand new USA made wood sets, real nice (a little pricey though).

Hope this helps...and post some pics when you are done!:)

Section 922R is a generic list refering to many parts of different types of firearms. To answer your question the FNFAL and varients do NOT have a "barrel extension" so you can disregard it.

922r List as it pertains to the FAL.

Parts Pertaining to FAL Rifles

(1) Receivers
(2) Barrels
(3) Barrel extensions Not on FAL
(4) Mounting blocks (trunions)Not on FAL
(5) Muzzle attachments
(6) Bolts
(7) Bolt carriers
(8) Operating rods***
(9) Gas pistons
(10) Trigger housings
(11) Triggers
(12) Hammers
(13) Sears
(14) DisconnectorsNot on FAL
(15) Buttstocks
(16) Pistol grips
(17) Forearms, handguards
(18) Magazine bodies
(19) Followers
(20) Floorplates (1) Receivers

***For the FAL this is the charging handle

Before playing the 922 game what kit are you building on? How much of it do ya want to keep original?

The hammer, trigger & sear would be the 1st to go in the spare parts bin.
FSE makes an excellent HTS set. And counts as 3 parts.
Gas piston. That's 4
Charging handle. 5
DSA receiver. 6

That leaves the PG, hand guards, stock & flash hider to choose from. And the barrel if it is unserviceable.

Pick one from that and you're good to go.

Not required but a good idea is a semi auto selector as well.

Problem solved

After reading up on FALfiles, this site, etc. I put in my order yesterday evening to GunPartsGuy over the phone. He is a very friendly, courteous person!

"basic" kit with the dark grey teflon moly on the barrel and lower, black furniture
Standard bolt and carrier (not sand cut)
"Standard" (not GL) gas plug (+$35)
"Excellent" chrome lined (+$20) 21" barrel cut to 18" and rethreaded (+$30)
SAW pistol grip (normally $10 but he threw it in free)

Total cost $565 shipped in 6 weeks or less. Too bad my DSA type II upper won't be here that fast... So now what am I supposed to do while I'm waiting? Those dang threads with all the pictures of people's FAL's are killing me, especially the guy tossing his in a mud puddle.

And to think I almost bought a Saiga? :scrutiny:

You building it up yourself? If so, do your homework at Falfiles first.

If your going to do a smith built gun, I *highly* reccomend Derek from Arizona Expert Arms. He did my build a few years back and it's a great gun.

I feel your pain - my receiver waited at my local FFL for almost a year before I was allowed to collect it. It's worth it in the end, tho ;)

if you think that's bad, go to weaponeer.com. those guys have homebuilt suomis and sterlings that would drive an honest man nuts. i bought a suomi kit after seeign those pictures.. sadly, i have no skills and all i can do is put the pieces together and imagine.
