Which is consdiered "better", a metric or inch-pattern FAL? I've heard the Inch L1A1 is considered "better" as it has a few ergonomic improvements; (the safety, for example), sand cuts in the receiver and bolt carrier and can take both inch and metric mags.

True? Why would you consider one over the other?

Metric parts are easier to come by in my experience, but both are plentiful nowadays.

The main reason to get metric instead of inch is that the STG-58 is a metric gun :D I openly admit bias though, because I love my STG and wouldn't trade it for any inch pattern gun.

Get a Metric. Either get a DSA built rifle (www.dsarms.com) or have one built on an Imbel or DSA receiver by one of the smiths over at the FALFiles (www.falfiles.com). Figure on spending about a grand for a decent one (though they can be built for less, maybe $750 all parts considered) unless you go with Ohio Rapid Fire (www.ohiorapidfire.com). Not sure if Todd still has any left or not, but they're a well-built FAL for a great pirce. With that being said, I have 2 DSA's and I would not trade them for any other FAL (aside from an all original FN specimen hehe).

The inch selector can be put on a metric rifle, the sand/lightening cuts can be found on the DSA US Made receivers so the improvement issue is moot. The best receivers out there today are metric (DSA/Imbel). Get an Inch if you want to be unique I guess.

Do not get a Century, Hesse or Enterprise unless you like gambling. They're hit or miss (with the Hesse rifles being more miss than hit). Measure twice, cut once.

Good luck, let us know if you have any ?'s.

I do not believe any currently manufactured receiver has the sand cuts.

I'll stick with the metric pattern. Parts and mags. are plentiful. My DSA STG58A loves the Port surplus ammo.

Nope, DSA does not make an inch receiver. They have been asked, begged, hassled, and generally given the business, but as of yet, they haven't caved. Type 1 and Type 2 metric receivers with the lightening cuts, yes. Commonwealth pattern internal sand cuts, no.....

kfranz is right, no sand cuts, not sure why I thought there were, looked at my rifles to be sure but figured he was on the money anyway. Not sure if there is really a need for the sand cuts though. I don't recall too many people having problems with reliability, of course I don't know anyone that lives in the desert and owns a FAL either...

FWIW, better depends on who you ask. I like the metric lower receiver with an inch selector, and all of my metrics have this mod. Two of them also have folding charging handles, but I don't find that to be much to write home about. My meeper quick change barrel carbine has an inch bolt/carrier, but only because I had a bunch of extras and I think they look "cool". I do like the way the inch rifle swings, as it just feels a bit less front heavy than do my metrics. I suspect furniture weight has something to do with it, but don't care enough at this point to verify. I don't so much like the inch pattern PG, as the angle is off or the grip is too square. Minor, but to my mind the metric wins in that regard.

Many inch receivers will function with metric mags, but it's not designed that way and you may have feeding issues. Inch mags will not lock up in a metric mag well due to the differening styles of mag catch cut.

At this point, I only have metric rifles. The only particular reason is that they all started out as kits, which once were cheap.....I did have an inch pattern rifle, but traded it off to a guy so he and his son could have matching rifles. That one was a Brit kit on the made in Canada Imbel/century receiver. I liked it, and if I were to find another cheap one, I'd buy it.

Yes. Original FH's generally had the provision to accept a bayonet. The Stoll flashhider on the StG 58 did not.

It was all in the configuration of the FH then, and no rear lug on the barrel?

I am on the verge of ordering a DSA factory built gun, but want to make sure the entire front end is in preban configuration.
