became part of the DOD new “Personal Defense Weapon” (PDW) in the 80’s. Of course, the Beretta was chosen from the competition.
What is little known that FN/Browning submitted two special pistols for the tryouts. One was a double action, and the other is what FN designers called, “fast action.”
This “hinged hammer” essentially meant, chamber a round, and you thumb the hammer forward, the firing pin retainer moves down and cams the firing pin safely forward, and then you put on the safety. When the safety is released, the first few oz’s of pressure on the trigger flips the hammer back into the full-cock position and returns the firing pin to striking mode. The gun is then fired in SA, along with all subsequent rds..Real neat….:)
It was thought by many gun authorities that this would revolutionize auto pistols as we know them…Unfortunately, FN held on to the patent and today Daewoo with the ROK armed forces enjoying this unique design. I’ve read somewhere that ParaOrd might have a similar model, but not too sure.
Pictured is the 9mm compact. BTW, the .40S&W is bigger + better…I like’em both….:p
