I live in Florida, my father in Montana. While there on a visit he wanted to give me a revolver & a .22 Rifle.

What a pain in the --- to legally transfer them. Both FL & MT have very good laws and if he were a FL resident and we were in FL I could have just taken possession, end of story. Of course because of the Federal Law I had to go FFL to FFL. No big deal it cost me some dollars & a couple hours.

What I find interesting is the way I read the law if my father would have died and left me the guns in his will I could have taken possession and flew them back on the plane with no issues.

I went the FFL route because it is the law and not worth losing my fire arm rights to save a few bucks. However I was told many different things when calling dealers to make the arrangements. I had one tell me that while I was right in my interpretation of the law, IT WAS NOT REALLY MENT TO STOP A FATHER FROM GIVING A SON A GUN!

I could imagine using that defense with the BATF.

Anyway my frustration lies with the over complication of the law that does not a thing to halt crime.

The last time I gave a gun to my son, I said "Here ya go!"

He said "Thanks, Pop!" and put it in the trunk of his car.

We didn't even consider going to an FFL. None of his damned business.

I would have done that to if we were in the same state, but I had to fly home & I could just see the TSA making an issue of it and causing more problems than its worth.

A non-licensee may ship directly to an FFL in any state. It does not need to be shipped by an FFL unless your state law requires it.

That is correct. As for me I had much rather follow the law, and not be bothered by the possibility of being found to be illegal.

Me Too, Thats why is shipped FFL to FFL. Yes I know we could have sent personally to the FFL, but they would only accept from another FFL.

Actually, only one FFL needed to be involved - your father could have shipped directly to an FFL in your state.

Few people would worry about father-son transfers the way you did . . . especially if your dad had obtained the guns when you were still living under his roof.
