Favored Synthetic Gun Oil?

Slip 2000 EWL. It doesn't evaporate like CLP and doesn't cook off like CLP either.

Mobile 1 for my guns, cheap, available, and cuts through carbon better than many dedicated gun cleaning products I've tried (ahem, hoppes).

I still think there is a use for grease that will stay put tho.

Mighht be a little off topic but I just did some math here.

A major mail order house for the shooting sports sells Hoppe's gun oil in 2 1/4 oz bottles for $2.49, not a bad price NO?

With 128 oz's per gal that comes out to 56.8888 bottles in said gal. which brings the price for the gun oil to $141.63 per gal.

And we get upset with gas over $3.00 a gal.?

Breakfree CLP.

I used to use Weaponshield, however it did not handle cold temperatures well. Though in its defense it was about -5 outside and windy.

Keep in mind fellas, that Mobil 1, while being a very high quality oil, is no longer a true "synthetic". It is refined from regular dino oil nowadays. They switched after losing a suit to some other manufacturer over the use of the "synthetic" label for non-syn oil.

I use Mobil 1 10W-30 myself, in my Mustang. Works well.

For firearm use, I doubt you need to go crazy and use Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil 1, or any of the fancy oils. Regular motor oil is a fantastic lubricant, and is designed to be used and abused in very tight clearances in engines (0.002-0.003" at the tightest spots, usually). Lubricating firearms is about as simple a job as you can give it!

Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 (full synthetic, at least that is what I've been led to believe). Left over from my last oil change, since my car only needs 3.8 qts. I buy the 5 qt jugs.

But I usually use WeaponShield, or Dexron VI ATF (the Supertech/Walmart brand stuff).

I also concur that regular dino motor oil would work fine, too. Just obviously make sure all this stuff is unused oil. Never use used oil that you drained from your transmission/engine/etc.

Tetra Gun. By and far the best firearm lubricant I've ever used.

What pray tell do you think they make synthetic oil out of, water? possibably corn silk? refined coal dust? Of course it starts out as petroleum products from the oil fields. There are a few mfg. making it from plant products tho.

I like synthetic automatic transmission fluid. It works best for me, though I do want to try Slip 2000EWL but it's not available where I am.

Eezox is my favorite synthetic gun oil. I've used most of the major brands and nothing else comes close, including motor oil.

I use both SLIP2000 EWL and Weaponshield, both are excellent.

FP-10 is OK, not as good as the above.

I find Eezox excellent as a dry lube or preservative, not as good all around. It's also somewhat toxic. And I use Boeshield T-9 on a lot of stuff as a preservative only. It has mediocre to poor lubrication properties.

If you prefer going with cheap automotive chemicals, ATF of any sort is far better than motor oil, because it has more corrosion inhibitors. Costs about the same too. You can get synthetic ATF if you want it - in fact it's fairly common now.

I would love to pay that much for fuel, if I only needed 1/56.8888 every few years....

I'm not sure if it is synthetic but I'm currently using Ballistol as it is good on metal, wood, rubber, my hands, etc. I have used Mob-1 20-W50 V-Twin and B&M Syn Trickshift ATF. For grease I'm currently using Ballistol mixed with marine wheel-bearing grease.

mobil 1 (whatever viscosity is in my garage) is by far the finest gun lube ever created in the universe.

Read my post very carefully again. I did not say I was paying $3.00 for a gal. for gas, just that we get upset when it goes over $3.00. By now we're really upset.
