Different strokes for different folks.

The reason I tried to make the favorite poll inclusive to only bolt and lever guns is because that is what I hunt with 99% of the time. I have a fair share of semi-auto, pump, and single-shot actions and they all have their place. I just prefer bolt actions above all else with levers being a close second.
Same here, Levers & Bolts about neck to neck! One my 06 is an auto, a Rem 742 Woodsmaster, a great deer rifle, but I just can't get close to it!
One cartridge mentioned here by several that I wish I had, a 300 Savage in either a Savage 99 or a Boltgun. Just never had opportunity.

I'll never trade or sell my old Mdl 99EG 300 Savage. It's lived in a saddle scabbard and never let me down, ever. It looks as scruffy as my Wby.

It wears a Weaver K2.5 in a Weaver Pivot Mount and is a wonderful brush gun; I like that I can pivot the scope to use the irons for close work in thickets. It's been good out to 300 yards with my 150 gr Speer recipe.
:what:
We have eerily similar tastes. I too have a Sav99 wearing an El Paso (heavy reticle) K2.5 on a pivot mount. It eats a Speer 150 SP load. It is a family heirloom however, and generally comes out for family reunion range day and an occasional sunny day hunt. My working .300 Sav is a Rem 760 with an older B&L 2x7 on a pivot mount, same load.

I just call that "Random" common sense.

In light of your disclosure I decided to One-up you Bigly.

I changed the K2.5 out for a vintage KV 2 3/4 - 5, so I can now make those 1,000 yard shots.

I've got the same weaver on my pre64 70, nice scope with the post reticle. I am to paranoid to change the power during season, I need some more range time with it to trust, still think I'd trade it out for a nice k4 or go modern.

My Dad's 30-06 was my first 30 caliber I ever shot. I remember him getting his shoulder bruised up with that rifle working up his loads. Modern butt pads are so much better than the butt plates of those days. I am content with the .308 Win.

I voted 308 but 30-06 comes in a close second for nostalgia reasons.

I5 would still be a nice round if it fit in more rifles, I've thought more then a few times to build a Siamese Mauser in 30-40
I've always thought that a combination gun with the 30-40 would be a great idea. The rimmed case lends itself to break open guns, and the Krag is a good power jump from the 30-30, which IS common in early German guns. They call the 30-30 a 7.62X51R and adopted it around 1900.

The 30-40 falls into the sweat spot for hunting in the USA, not overkill but still pretty powerful compared to the 30-30. Kinda wished the steel case 7.62x54r or the brass ppu didn't dry up its a perfect fit in the siamese.

I got my first 30-06 when I was 12. I'm 67 now and it's still my favorite followed by the 30-30. I've never been without a 30-06. I had a .308 about 45 years ago. I think I kept it for about 6 months.
