For my uses, the .30-30 is the best. I only really hunt whitetail these days. If I need greater range than the .30-30 offers, my .30-06 isn't first on my list. The .30-30 just does what it does without any fanfare or fuss. Plus, my old Marlin 336 SC feels nice in my hands.

I chose 30-06. I have killed more deer with a 30-30, and truth be told I hunt more with 300wm these days than 30-06 or 30-30. But the history and significance the 30-06 has had to the entire world thru several wars and thereafter puts it on top for me. I hunted quite a bit as a teenager with my grandad's circa 1930's Springfield 4 groove . It was a heavy beast, but it sure did shoot good.🙂

Got my Remington 700, 30-06 in 1974. In a few days i will have 50 years of great hunting memories with that old gun. Never a fail with the gun (or the caliber). Why didn't I ever get me another?? Simple, Never had need to. I have no doubt it will go another 50.
Got this book for Christmas, it's outstanding, having only read little over 100 of its 500+ pages! But he killed all the big game species of North America, over a number of years, with one Mod 700 ADL 30-06, he bought new in 74, using only 165 up to 200gr Nosler Partitions.
I was very familiar with a friend's 700 30-06 made in early 70's, which I used some in early 80's. I have a 700 in 270, but I'd 2 to 1 rather have one in 06 from the 70's, just my preference for sure!
But the 06 is fenominal in accomplishments all over the world! Regardless of your favorite cartridge it's a great book! 20231230_093123.jpg

30-06 is my favorite. It was my first and remains my all-around pick. I might recommend someone start with the 308 over the ‘06 now. But that’s not what I did and now I’ll never be without an ‘06.
They have tried to beat out the 06 since the day it came out. But, All they can do is give tit for tat. With the wide variety of 06 available ammo on the market it simply can't be beat. Add 06 to the Remington 700 and you have The Lord of all gun Gods.

I just call that "Random" common sense.

In light of your disclosure I decided to One-up you Bigly.

I changed the K2.5 out for a vintage KV 2 3/4 - 5, so I can now make those 1,000 yard shots.

So with your offset scope. Say for instance it is 1" offset to the left of the rifle. Are you adjusting your scope to POA = POI at a certain range and are ok with the discrepancy due to the offset at the varied ranges around the sight in range?

Or are you simply knowing that your POI will always land 1" to the right and just have that in your head so as to not create dispersion over the different distances to the target?

Seems like I would want the latter to be how I would sight it in so that my POA/POI is always in the same relationship regardless of distance.

I've always been curious how people set their rifles up that have an offset scope to the bore.

The scope isn't offset at all. I was showing it pivoted to the side for open sight use. The Weaver Pivot mount snaps right on top of the action. The sidemounts for my Savage 340 centers the scope over the bore, also. The third photo shows the scope locked in place on the 99, right over the action center.

On combo guns I've had with offset scopes I sighted in the same distance to the side as the actual offset, generally less than an inch.

That reminds me, I need to load a few 300 Svg rounds and re-sight in the 99.
