Looking to see what everyone has to say is their favorite .44 magnum woods gun. I'm not interested in any other calibers. What is it? The Smith 29/629? Ruger Redhawk? Colt Anaconda? Let me know. I'm thinking about getting a 4" or 6" full lug as an all around user. What is your preference?

I think the Mountain Gun would be my favorite overall, if I could find one used. But for hunting this year, I carried my S&W Mod 629-4 all over in a low slung cowboy type holster, and walked many a mile in total comfort. I think it's only a few ounces heavier than the Mountain Gun, but has a 6" barrel for extra coolness. :D

My bear encounter as of 10-30-05

Here's the long of it. I went to my property on lake Oroville
for the last weekend of deer season and took along my win. 44 mag.
trapper and my model 66 4" (.357). I got up nice and early to scout and
realized I had forgotten my 44 ammo. I did have some .357 for the
model 66 and so I headed off. I got about 25 yds from my trailer
and ran into a very plump black bear. I stopped and watched as
he sauntered towards me when he stopped, I put a round in the ground
under his head and nothing happened. I then put one under his butt and
still nothing. I then questioned my wisdom as now I only had 4 rounds
left if he charged. I raised my arms and aimed at the area between
his shoulder blades as he had now turned directly at me. I decided
not to shoot it because if it attacked I would be malued rather handlely
due to the short distance (12 steps measured after the encounter)
and I wasn't going to provoke a defensive attack at close range.
I cocked the pistol and lifted my elbows and the animal ran away.
His body jiggled like a bowl of jelly as he disappeared into the oak trees.
The bottom line for me is that I have a 4" mountain revolver; a 6" 29-3;
a 6.5" 629 classic pp and as of today a new 629 5" classic; The classic
5"
will be my carry gun on the property from now on. I always felt adequate
with my.357 for mountain lions;rattlers but at close range I want the .44 mag
The .357 may have worked but at close range like I was faced with
I didn't think I could stop the animal before being mauled. The mountain revolver would work just as well but I find the recoil with factory 240grn
loads excessive. The 5" inch delivers balance and weight at an acceptable
level for me. ;)

It used to be either a 7 1/2" Super Blackhawk or a 4 5/8" Blackhawk.

In more recent years it became either a S&W 629 Classic 6 1/2" which had been MagNaPorted, or a Ruger Redhawk 5 1/2" with a grip frame modified to a round-butt profile. Both shoot very well, and handle very well. The Ruger has a slight edge because I've never found a suitable set of stocks for the small round-butt N-frame which I really like, and the modified Redhawk slips into my hand like it was made for it (which it was ;) ).

If I could find a nice 5" .44 Magnum Mountain Gun, I might consider buying it ... although the full underlug Classic is very controllable, especially with the MagNaPorting.

I may still pick up another 4 5/8" Blackhawk, though, since I foolishly sold off my last one, since that short barreled Blackhawk has about the best balance and handling ... for me ... which I've ever experienced. The obvious drawback is the SA operation, especially if you're shooting it 1-handed.

Although, getting just a little off-topic ... with the introduction of the .500 S&W Magnum I'm considering adding one of the 4" models to my 'backwoods' collection. ;)

The newer 270gr-315gr factory .44 Magnum loads sort of pale when compared to the available .500 S&W Magnum loads, especially if considered for large, dangerous animals.

Then, there's the Ruger Alaskan in .454 CAS ... :)

Did I mention I may still pick up another 4 5/8" Blackhawk again? Probably my favorite fastest handling, well balanced, accurate little .44 Magnum of all time.

Either the Redhawk or a 629 would do fine. I have both, I "think" the Redhawk might be the stronger, but the Smith is more accurate--no question about that from the two that I own.

I wouldn't necessarily consider yourself the oddball ... but if you hang onto that .44 Colt snake gun long enough, it may someday qualify as a real curio & relic. :neener:

Just kidding in a good-natured way. ;)

I bet it shoots accurately ...

Back in the day...

Mine was a Model 29 with a 5" barrel. Something about big bores and 5" barrels.

Always liked the number "5" anyway, so when I had this done, the fella understood why. Did not argue about the Laynard Ring I wanted on it too...just be careful with them stocks is all I had to remind him of.

Blue&Wood, Iron Sights, and Leather for holster and laynard.

;)

Another vote here for the Smith 629 as an all-around woods gun. Mine has a 5" barrel and the full underlug. I've had a couple of Rugers, a 5 1/2" Redhawk and a 4 5/8" Blackhawk, both .45 Colts that I thought would be better all-around woods guns, but I keep coming back to the Smith .44 Magnum.

For the money Ruger
but I love them Colts (football team is doing well also)

Can the 3" 629 handle a steady diet of 300gr Black Hills or Hornady (assuming my hand can handle it, too), or should I limit it to 240-grainers?

Even though I am in lust with my 6" anaconda. My favorite woods 44 magnum is my 4" 29-2 pinned barrel, recessed chamber. I have used it with good success on several irate boars with Remington factory 275 gr. Much more controllable than my 629 Mountain gun Plus I just like the vintage look.

Another vote for the model 29 4". The one I have is an old 4 screw bright blue made in 1959. The previous owner had it Magnaported and I wasen't real happy about that when I bought it (stole it...if I can't steal it, I won't buy it) but its like shooting a 357!!! I have a 4" Smith 57 41 mag, 4" Smith 44 Special, 4" Ruger 3 screw 41 mag, 4" Ruger 357 Flattop, 3" model 60 357, and various other good woods carry guns but the 4" S&W 44 mag now my favorite. Hope to pop a deer with it before the season is over. My 7 1/2" Ruger 357 Max will have to wait another year!:D

This one:

Started life as a 10 1/2" model but now it's a whole 4". An action job and roudbutting finished it al off.
