1911 Full size
Self Defense
.45 ACP
Hunting - buy a barrel and recoil spring
.400 CorBon or
.460 Roland
plinking/training
.22 LR Conversion SLide Barrel etc.

Nothing else comes close to that platform for ALL AROUND

I like my SP101, but for "all around", I'd choose my model 65 K frame .357. Longer barrel (4" vs. 2 1/4).

Great there's no poll

and 80% just name their fav. handgun with little
regard to All Around.... in terms of taking game a
9mm doesn't cut it nor do short barreld wheel guns.

A good 1911 because the natural aim you get from that handgun. Close runner up will be Sig Sauer P226 9mm for cheaper shooting at the range. Sig P220 .45 ACP. Why the 1911? because I am a tradionalist and love that thumb safety.

Medium-frame, stainless .357 magnum

My absolutely favorite gun that I have ever shot is my 4", stainless GP100. I switched it over to hogue grips last year and have not looked back. I liked the old grips, but I love the hogues. I bought the grips from Ruger so that I could have the Ruger symbol pressed into the grip instead of the hogue symbol. Love that gun.

S&W 5904 -- I've put maybe 10000 rounds downrange with 2 FTFs. I bought it used (police trade-in) and it's totally spoiled me. The slide and barrel rattle when I shake it, it's ugly, it's not terribly accurate, the trigger pull is pretty long, but my God it's reliable.

That depends largely on your shooting ability and the load in the gun. If it was all I had, I could do quite well with the 2.5" M66 in the picture I posted earlier, or my wife's KelTec P11.

The last pig I shot was about 12 feet away, and the last deer was roughly 15 feet away. Neither was injured or tame(until I shot, then they were dead :D), nor were they in a trap or on a "game ranch". I used a rifle on both, because that's what was handy/in my hands at the time. If I could have gotten to it, I would have used the Taurus 85 .38 special snubby I was carrying on the deer. Too bad it was stuffed under 3 layers of clothing.

YMMV

I posted my Kimber earlier but "all around" is Another thing all together. Suprise....Mine in the all around category is fast becoming the Springfield XD-M .40 cal. It grows on me each day that passes.

1. Smith and Wesson model 60 .357 3 in brl.

2. cz-75, cz40

3. Browning Hi-Power

4. ruger p95

All Around as in

Hunting out to 100 yards
Self Defense / Conditional CCW say under a sport coat
Plinking all day

My guns to choose from:

1911 .45 ACP Full size and yes I do have a
Jarvis Inc. Stainless Barrel in .400 CorBon
Nees a .22 LR conversion Kit

By the time the above gets totaled up... with 5 spare mags
it would equal my next two favorites

S&W 625 5" Bbl. .45 ACP as well as heavier loads in .45 AUto Rim
S&W 617 6" Bbl. .22 LR 10 shot cyl.

Next fav. is my
S&W Model 60 3" Adj. SIghts .357 Mag but it's just a handy gun
for traveling light but does have the versatility of
light .38 Special to +P to full bore Mag. loads. but OUCH after not to long.

Then there is the
S&W 686P .357 Mag. 4" Bbl. with a
Milt SParks #200AW FBI Cant lined with Basket weave
$155 holster along with $125 Guy Hogue finger grooved & checkerd
COmpact size ROsewood grips. And I just don't enjoy shooting it
with the muzzle flash/'recoil but it sure looks good Along with 4
HKS 587 SPeedloaders that don't load easy as they are a
tight fit on the thumb latch release with the 7 shot cylinder is what I found.

Argh, thanks for reading, I'll keep trying with the thing
but the 625 is so much more fun and easy to hit the 10 ring.

Stainless steel L frame Smith and Wesson 686. Shoots .357 Magnums for serious encounters of all kinds and for fun .38 Special wadcutters.

.357 has got to be the most versatile handgun and you can get barrel length to suit what you will do with it. I personally have 2 with 4" barrels.

I kick myself for not getting one of the old Dan Wessons with changeable barrels.

Like i has been said it is hard to beat a 4 inch smith in 357.
Small enough to tote around.
Big enough to handle full tilt .357's.
Accurate.
Enough punch to go hunting with even though I would rather have a 6 inch if I was going to use if for that.
Can shoot 38's for target work.
I don't know of an auto that can do the same things. The only things autos have is capacity.

I would say my favorite all around is my Sig P-228. It is probably the most balanced pistol I've ever shot. Plus, 9mm is still fairly affordable enough to feed it on a regular basis. It works well as a CCW, range shooter and for HD. What's not to like?
