I'm playing with some new loads for my .40 and am courious as to what grain other shooters prefer. I've shot some 165 but mostly kept to the 180's. I like the 180's in my Keltec Sub2000 with the longer barrel, but my Glock could probably benefit form the 155 or 165 loads more. So whats your favorite or just makes sence to you balistically? Thanks!

I use 165's for just about everything although I can't really tell a big difference in them and the 180"s. I shot 180's for several years and they shot well. I think the biggest reason that I switched is because I got several thousand 165's for cheap once and just never switched back

I generally stick to the 180's but that is because the 165's that I can get locally (Winchester target ammo) and my XD do not get along.

Taurus 24/7 Pro

Most of the time for practice I shoot the Winchester 165gr FMJ. For self defense the 165gr Remington Golden Saber and the Winchester 165gr SXT. I really like the Federal 155gr Hydra-shok for self defense also [shoots well]. I would stay away from 180gr for self defense, unless you are shooting from a 5 inch barrel. Then the ballastics are usually good enough for the hollow point to open. In 180gr I would stick to top loads such as Remington, Winchester and Federal. The 165gr Winchester SXT is the most accurate of the bunch so far-great load. You can get 165gr practice ammo [Winchester] at Wal-Mart for 17.78 for a box of 100.

When the 24/7 OSS comes out I am getting one of those. Have money down on one in a .40 cal already. [.45 is on my list too]

Have a good One!

If im shooting retail, WWB 165gr. Otherwise I reload Berry's 155gr, or lazercast 155gr. Both seem very accurate and cost effective. Practice ammo I usually go low grain, usually results in less gun wear.

I prefer the 155 grain JHP's for self defense, I think they are well suited to shorter barrelled guns, like my Taurus Mil-Pro 40 with a 3.25" barrel. I fired one of my 155 grain Winchester Ranger's into 5 (1) gallon milk jugs, it penetrated 4 of them and the expansion was violent and complete, impressive performance.

Forgot to mention.

The Speer gold dot 155gr is a great load for SD. I have not used it as much because it take's a lot of practice with it to be accurate. Has more of a recoil-placement issue.

Take Care!
