Just curious if any of you have a favored practice ammo with the same point of impact as the 158 gr. LSWCHP +P? Currently I've just been practicing with the round itself, but I imagine there's a cheaper alternative!

TIA.

I carry the "FBI/Metro Load" and generally practice with either 158 grain LRN or LSWC of whatever happens to be on sale.

I have found the POI/POA to be dead-on.

Try a 158 gr LSWC and 5.0grs of Unique or Universal and a standard primer. This is my standard for all 38s and load with the FBI/metro Load for serious social work.

Winchester still makes it. I think Remington might make it and as well Federal.

Check firearms retailers its still out there on the shelves.

Well, the LSWC-HP (called the "FBI" or "Metro" Load b/c those agencies made them famous for carrying it, also called the Chicago Load, and a half dozen other monickers) loads I have are:

Remington R38S12 (usually keep 10-12 boxes around) -- like it the best of the easily found loads b/c of its slightly softer lead alloy.

Cor-Bon 158 LSWC-HP (very hot, not made for a few years -- nigh impossible to find, best of the bunch) (I'm nursing the 3 boxes I have left)

Federal 158 LSWC-HP also is quite nice, but sadly discontinued -- i bought up the 10 boxes I could find locally in my gun shop circuit.

I also have handloads of the 158 LSWC-HP in 357 magnum cases, coming out of my 3" M-66 at about 1050 ft/sec that are also adequate. I think of them as "magnum Lites".

If you want to purchase new ammo for practice any lead 158 gr load will shoot within an inch or two of the metro/FBI load. RNL is alot cheaper than the Metro lead. ;)

Chicago/ FBI/ Baltimore/ Miami and others who used the 158 LSWC-HP used it and liked it. Autos were what stopped the active manufacture of the 38 rd.

38s' are still quite a viable defense system and the Metro/FBI load does all things well.

Evan Marshall a leading Firearms writer and retired Detroit Homicide Detective said the Metro load performed way beyond its caliber size or velocity. Hundreds of police shootings have proven that statement to be valid.
