I know everyone has their own opinion on this topic. I just like reading this type of stuff. Mine would have to be a remington 700 (i have a ADL), chambered in .270 win. The 700 for the fact that in my eyes they are the best line of hunting rifles ever made. The reason for the .270 is just because i love that round (.308, .30-06 are also very capable catridges too). Make sure to tell why too.

I love the .280 Rem personally, with the old tried and true .30-06 nipping at it's heels. The .280 is just about perfect for deer sized game, and adequate for elk. I just love it. It's not as far behind the 7mm Rem Mag as most think it is. My .280 is a NEF Handi Rifle. I eventually want to get one in a nice bolt. I found a like new Ruger 77 in the caliber not long ago, and as luck would have it, I didn't have the spare change to take it home. It'll happen though.
I share your love of the Remington 700 as well. There's a reason they call it the standard by which all bolt actions are measured. They've got that pesky trigger issue fixed now too, so what's not to love?

Here is a shocker to everyone that keeps up with my posts (not) My all time favorite is my T3 Stainless 6.5x55, it will quickly kill anything this side of Alaska, with a nice flat trajectory, best ballistics of the small caliber world, next to nothing for recoil, super accurate, and it won't ring your ears in the treestand like my other rifles will. My Tikka weighs all of 7lbs scoped and loaded, it is very egronomic for a smaller shooter like myself, and it has the smoothest action and cleanest trigger of ANY production rifle. You can look the world over and not find a better combonation for deer. I used to use 270s both win and WSM and owned a slew of magnums and 30 cals but I just like the ol Sweed a little better. Makes you think them Sweeds knew what they were doing 121 years ago :D

In before Kachok and the 6.5x55. Oh, wait. ;)

If needed, a Ruger .270 or .25-06 is what I would reach for. Last year predominantly saw an AR in 6.8 SPC.

Haha arn't we funny LOL I think it is crazy that there are like 40,000,000 outspoken 30-06 fanatics on here who recomend them for everything from varmint to brown bear, and I get janked on for likeing something different, now mind you I really like my 30-06 too, but that is just WAY more gun then anyone ever needs for a deer IMHO.
For what it is worth my Grandfather had more trophy racks on the wall than anyone I have ever heard of and his favorite was the 280Rem. He owned over three hundred firearms at the time of his death and that Rem 700 was his go to gun every time.

I have two favorites. I like my 99e 308 for most of my hunting, but when I sit on the edge of a wheatfield my 257 weatherby is my go to and I love it for that. So there are my two favorites.

Its all about shot placement and bullet construction. Everything other centerfire will get the job done.

I have tried lots of different calibers over the years, but always go back the the .30-06. With that said, if I were to go deer rifle shopping today, I believe I would opt for a short action in 7mm-08.

For stalking or still hunting the north woods, the Winchester pre-64 1894 in 30wcf (30-30).
For long range open country work, my Savage LRP in .260 Remington.

I read an article in "Rifle" magazine, on how the .280 Rem is dying out. Blasphemy!
I own an 80's era Remington 7400 in .280 Remington that prints as good as any standard
bolt action with my handloads, curiously it prefers core lokt's the best.

Dylon,

Good to read that you like your rifle. It's important to know ones rifle well and to practice with it. The 270 you mention is just fine for most game and popular and ammo is readily available as well.

Down the road as you visit gun shops make sure to handle other brands. I favor rifles that have a better safety, trigger and action than the 700 type rifle.

Look at a M70 for instance for its three position safety that controls the firing pin and also allows unloading a hot chamber when on safe and not just a trigger safety like the 700.

Also find a M70, Kimber or Ruger for that matter with control round feeding. They are just better 'machinery' and make for superior function and a greater pride of ownership as well.

I go back 60 years on this and had a Rem back then. Now I hunt with M70's, Kimbers, custom Mausers etc.

Who said that? The 280 is in the middle of a comeback, anyone else notice that Browning and TC just started chambering it again? As shooters and hunters are becoming more informed about external ballistics people finnaly see the advantage it has over the 270, now mind you the 270 Win is as capable a round now as it has ever been, but speaking from a ballistics standpoint the 280 has always had the advantage even if it is a slightly lower pressure cartrage. According to my reloading manuals the 280 is capable of pushing a 140gr just as fast as the 270 throws a 130 and the 7mm projectile wins as far as BC and SD go. Other then half a pound of recoil (if that) the 270 holds no advantage over the 280

Ruger is also chambering the 280 again this year. I pick my Ruger 280 up a few months back, but it was new old stock. It's a very accurate rifle. I wonder where the 280 would be if the ammo price was the same as the 30-06 and 270.

7mm remington magnum in a Remington 700. Ive had issues with my 7mm and its cost me a couple hundred bucks more then it should, but ive enjoyed it and i have absolute confidence in it now. Ive always liked the way the 700 looks and feels better then any of the other available action. As for my choice in rounds, well its pure personal preference. Nothing ive done while hunting i couldnt do with a .243 or even the old .30-30. I might be looking at a .280 to complement my 7mm and 7-30 waters...then all id need is a 7mm-08 and id have a 7mm collection to match the popular 30s lol.

280 ,,I have a winchester clasic feather weight. My other would be my 8 mm custom if its raining,
