Favorite rifle/caliber for deer

I like my CZ550FS in .308. It's well balanced, accurate, has iron sights as well as provisions for a scope and a good single set trigger. The .308 is an excellent hunting round capable of taking anything in the lower 48. It's a great rifle for the price which i quite reasonable.

If you are a meat hunter there is such thing as "too much gun" though that usualy has a little less to do with the caliber and more to do with the bullets speed. Ever hit a deer through the shoulders with a 7mm Rem Mag 140gr 3,300fps at close range? You can forget about eating any part of those shoulders that is for sure. I started hunting with more practicle cartrages several years ago and won't touch another hot magnum unless I am shooting WAY out there. 308, 7-08 6.5x55 SE, 30-30, 7x57 will kill them just as dead just as quick with proper shot placement, my friends hunt with larger calibers and magnum, and we track many a deer they shot, mine never make it more then a few feet. Of course I have passed on several shots last year when they did not persent a good angle, just picky like that. But what makes more difference then caliber is the deers mental state, if you spook one before you shoot him he gets a chance to get his adrenaline pumping, once that happens it does not matter if you hit him with a 22-250 or a 416 Rigby he is going to run, I have seen them run with their heat and lungs turned to liquid, it does not matter, the brain still works for a few seconds. Shoot them without spooking them they are much more likely to go streight down.
I'm a meat hunter and that is why I don't shoot them in the shoulders. There isn't enough meat on the rib cage of a deer to worry about.

Placement. It is all about placement. Deflection is probably more of an issue with a smaller caliber but any centerfire round that hits the heart and lungs is going to kill the deer within just a few seconds and any gut shot will probably allow the deer to survive for a while during which the animal can cover a long distance. We can discuss the advantages/attributes of our favorites all day long but the difference between a 22-250 and a 7mag, when the bullet is placed properly, is negligible.

Hey deer ribs are actualy pretty darn good, boil them for 15 min before you throw them on the grill and watch how good they turn out :) with my 6.5 I can eat up to the hole, though with Ballistic Tips I have to pick out a few pieces of bullet out of the lining of the rib cage before I cook them. Total meat damage is mabey an ounce or two, try that with your ultra mag LOL Medium speed cartrages can turn lungs unto a bloody chunky soup, complete destruction, now a 300 Ultra mag may very well be able to vapoize them, but I fail to see how that is any more effective. That is why I don't buy into the massive overkill mindset anymore, my little sissy kicker puts them down just as quick as my belted magnums as long as you place it right and have the penatration to back it up.

If you hunt deer, and you can't get close enough to kill it with a 30-30, then you don't need to kill it.
Plains hunters think woods hunters need to learn how to shoot, woods hunters think plains hunters need to learn to stalk. The debate will go on until the end of time, I hunt both :D

Friend had a 264 win mag and thought it was the cats meow, I however would rather eat up to the hole as in .45 cal black powder kentucky rifle.

The way i prefer to use magnums is to drive heavy bullets as fast as standard cartridge will drive med/lights. Ive also noticed rhat most frangible hunting bullets will blow the crap out stuff with an impact velocity over 23-2500fps, you can tailor your damage by bullet choice, weight and velocity.

Honestly how many 300 ultra mag shooters do you know who use 220-240gr Loonwulf? All the one I have known are trying to push 150-180gr to ungodly speeds. I agree with you though, that is the ideal use for a magnum. Now the 7mm crowd does like their heavy bullets, seen a bunch of 7mm RM and RUM guys shooting 160-180gr, but they are the exception.

243 and or 25.06 270 all are a very good. It is up to you! The 243 will also make a all round gun. GOOD LUCK

Good point Kachok. Most of the magnum guys i know shoot middle 150s and 165s depending on calibers, but i haven seen an ultramager here yet. Most long range "shooters" stick with standard mags...or the random lapua

I have known several ultra mag/Wby/lapua mag guys. Most of them use mid weight bullets at stupid high speeds. Now some of them can really shoot, others need to step down a touch, my best friend swears by his magnums, but at the range he shoots VASTLY better with my 6.5x55 I keep telling him that ideal shot placement trumps 4,000 ft/lbs of energy anyday. He is young, he will learn eventualy. He missed his last two deer, one at aprox 300yd and the other at half of that, judging by his shooting with low recoil rifles I have little doubt that he would have easly hit both of them had he been using a rifle that he was more comfortable with.

25-06

So I can kill yotes with 85 grain bullets, and step up to 100, 110, 115, or 120 grain for deer. I'd rather have a versatile rifle that can be effective on more than one kind of game. I can't afford two Sako 75 Finnlights; so the one I bought, I got it in 25-06 which is very good for coyotes and deer, and hogs. At least my father busted a huge hog with a 100 grain Barnes Triple Shock. And it dropped like a ton of bricks.

Favorite Rifle For Deer

HUM if i had to pick just one its my little 500 S&W Magnum Handi-Rifle & my second choice is the 300 WBY Magnum with 180gr & 3,000 f.p.s. i use the both of them here our terrian calls for it really IMHO

Hunting in Missouri and Wisconsin, .30/06 and .308 always killed deer dead for me.
I killed my first deer with a .30/30 Model 94 Winchester carbine.

I have a 300 win mag remington model 798. I know alot of people tell me its to much gun. I can handle the recoil and I'm very confident in my shooting skills. Plus for me is I can use it for elk too.

My current favorite is my Ruger Hawkeye Ultralight in .257 Roberts. Shoots well with 100 gr SP and 90gr GMX handloads. Perfect setup with the Leupold VXII 2-7x.

Depends on how and where I'm hunting.

My all round rifle/cartridge combo is my Remington model 7600 Carbine 30-06 Spr. with a Leupold VX-II 2-7x33mm Scope on it. I use it for most of my deer hunting. For sitting, watching, some still hunting, basically when my shots will most likely be 2 to 200 yards.

If I'm going to be watching big fields, I use my Remington model 700 Classic 280 Rem. with an older Redfield Tracker 3-9x40mm Scope. I'm going to put a new Leupold VX-2 4-12x40mm Scope on it soon. If my shots might be over 200 yards I grab this rifle. This is my favorite rifle and cartridge.

I use my Marlin 336C 35 Rem. with XS Ghost Ring Sights when I'm hunting in thick brush, deep thick woods, doing deer drives or still hunting.

I might get a 6.8 Rem. SPC upper for my AR15. Just because I like the AR platform so much and want to use it more often.

NYH1.

Any centerfire, and slug where required. Best is 30-06 or 7mm Mag. prettty useful, 30-30 or .223 where allowed. and anything in between. No such thing as a bad cartridge.
Just poor judgement in a situation.

First deer that I killed was a one shot with my AR-15. Lucky I guess. For me, the best gun will always be a bolt in the trusty old 30-06. Over a hundred years old and still going strong. Tim

Most deer taken with .30-06.
Favorite to carry 30-30.
Current favorite 45-70.

But, tomorrow it could be something different. Choices, what makes life worth living.

7mm rem mag but lighter bullets,139gr sst elk , deer
308 with 125gr NBT or sst deer, 150gr barnes x pigs
223 with 64gr sp deer
