Semi-Annual FBI crime stats are out (12/19/2011) for the 1st half of 2011. Can be found here:

http://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/pr...liminary-semiannual-crime-statistics-for-2011

I took the liberty of denormalizing the data in the downloadable spreadsheet and added a percentage column for each category. I've attached it as a ZIP file. This allows anyone to filter and sort if they have Excel. Some eye-opening data, some already expected.

Here are a few facts -

New Orleans is the murder capital (sorry Detroit) for the US based strictly of percentage of population. Duh...

Bridgeport, CT had the highest per captia rate of rape...

NYC ranks 100 in violent crime even though it is the largest city...

Kind of puts things in perspective when one talks about ST&T.

Perspective is something i think is often lacking. For example, how many hear who devote so much time and energy to defense against violent predators also smoke or have other poor health habits. Because the latter is far more likely to get you than a criminal. I'm all for taking reasonable steps and being vigilant but also realize that i will probably make it through my entire life without ever having to shoot somebody.

Another thing that should be considered when evaluating violent crime statistics is that a large portion of victims were attacked because of their own criminal acts such as gang activity.

But for a better picture of your actual chances of being attacked look up the statistics for your own city as they can vary significantly from area to area. If you divide total incidents by total population it will give you a rough idea of your chance of being said victim in a years time. But remember that those numbers don't accurately represent average citizens as criminals are included.
