Really odd story here so please bear with me.

A close friend of mine is a career Army Officer with over 23 years of active duty and is currently serving his second tour in Iraq. He holds a Top Secret clearance and has distinguished himself in every way.

A number of years back, he found (via a call from law enforcement) that a relative had illegally and unbenownst to him used his identity (name, SSN, etc) to commit some level of fraud (employment, state benefits, etc). This relative is an illegal alien and his whereabouts are unknown to my friend. After some time and investigation, the FBI and possibly other agencies, inform my friend that they are convinced that my buddy has more information than what he's sharing and that if he is not forthcoming with it, they will do nothing to "clear his record".

So over the last few years, he has been stopped, cuffed, etc by local, county and state LEs. Not until he convinces them to go look carefully at the description of the wanted person is he released and this has been narrowly at times. He is patient and understanding (more than I would be) and has never raised a fuss. He did try to get JAG involved but that was short-lived and he was later told he was on his own.

The last straw for me was the indignity that befell him and me recently. He had saved up the money for a new M4 and while home on leave to visit me, I took him down to the local Academy and we attempted to purchase a new Bushmaster. You guessed it. First came the delayed followed after a couple of hours later by an outright denial.

He has since gone back to Iraq to finish out his tour. I am left hopelessly angry with the authorities and their treatment of, what is to me, a great American hero. He cannot afford a lawyer and even if he could, not sure what exactly could be done with a lawyer unless the funds were sufficient to fight the feds on this one. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. :fire:

There are all kinds of threads here on how to deal with a NICS denial. Fixing the other problem is beyond the scope of this forum.
