Federal Ammo Quality

There are some wet tumble haters that would say that ammo is just fine…;)

In truth, they’re right. It’s just dirty and will make your fingers black. Federal probably is rushing the only part they can speed up, the finish tumble after being loaded.
If they are New Old Stock, they just have a little tarnish where there isn’t any protectant on the brass. And I agree with @deputy bruce , the cardboard could have sped the process.
Do you feel any pits? No? Good, they’re fine.

From seeing them through a screen, I do hereby dub them safe to fire.:D

The primer corrosion is merely the sealer, you can see where the pin applicator touches the edge and the rest flows around the pocket joint to seal it.

How do the bullets look? Are they the same as the brass? (Which would actually make me happier, suggesting they were sealed before any foreign contaminates could affect the powder.)

It would suck if they shot well, wouldn’t it?:p

I have never bought any Federal ammunition that looked like even close to that and I have bought a lot of Federal ammunition. The last I bought was also at Walmart....Federal Premium Gold Medal 6.5 Creedmoor 130gr Berger OTM. Good price and very good ammunition.

The only Federal ammo I have purchased in years is 22 LR. It is bottom of the barrel quality no matter what it says on it's container. Plinker quality and barely that. After seeing that the box it was in is in good shape I am glad that I haven't purchased any of their centerfire stuff.

WalMart might be cheaper than the illustrious company known as "Cheaper Than Dirt".

I did financial business with the Bentonville Bandits for too many years. I should write a book. The word ruthless comes to mind. I do not want to highjack this thread, but before we all go off on Federal we need to know whose warehouse they sat in and for how long. Where did they "buy" them from?

Federal, except for bulk 22 LR at the height of the previous ammunition shortage, has always worked well for me. Their inexpensive Fusion 308s are some of the most accurate in my Tikka T3, and their shotshells and handgun rounds have been accurate and reliable. They can't control storage. Condensation happens in enclosed storage where temps fluctuate and air does not circulate. Like the shipping containers seen outside many Walmart and other retailers.

I bought a box of Federal Power Shok 7mm Rem Mag yesterday from Walmart. I returned home, opened the box, and was appalled by the quality of the ammunition as the brass appears to be corroded/rusty. I do not know how this passed QC.

Is it ridiculous that I think that this is unacceptable?

I am not bashing Federal as manufacturers have issues and the gun industry is usually pretty good to their customers when issues arise. I emailed Federal about it. I'll keep you posted as to what they say and do. Hopefully, they make it right.

Looks like it was salvaged from storm surge after a whirlycane.

After receiving my message, Federal requested photos of the ammo. Upon receipt of the photos, Federal provided the following response:

Thank you for the reply and photos.

We will request a new box of this ammo be sent to you as soon as possible. Please be patient as shipping is taking longer than usual due to the high demand for ammunition.

You can still shoot the box of ammo even though the brass looks spotty, it will preform as expected.

I am very happy with this response. That kind of response is a hallmark of a top-notch company!

Great!

I haven’t had any problems with Federal and that might be a secondary problem like condensation from temperature changes in storage.

Winchester is on my spit list though. I’m done with them for a while.

I had the same problem with Winchester several years ago, but not as bad.

Federal is a company of its word. I received the box of ammo today, as promised. That was much sooner than expected. I’ve bought and shot Federal in the pst without issue. In this instance, they owned the issue (debatable whether it was an issue on their part, Walmart’s, or other), and have a happy customer. Rest assured that Federal treats its customers right!
