Anyone have a link documenting any hardness difference between Federal Magnum Small Pistol primers and Federal Standard Small Pistol Primers?

Thanks

I've read in the forums that the Federal and Winchester small pistol primer has a softer cup than CCI, and that the Federal is the softest. Nothing about magnum vs. standard. If I had to guess I'd guess they use the same cup.

After tens of thousands of loading CCI primers and a few k Winchester and Remington primers, I finally bought some Federal SPP. They feel considerably softer when seating them. Of course that is a qualitative statement. It actually makes seating them quite a bit easier with the LnL AP and the Lee hand primer and I've probably also been able to squeeze some through crimped 9mm cases where they would not have worked with CCI primers.

Federal pistol primers seat easier, and seem more sensitive and flow more in the primer pocket. I guess this explains the funky packaging

Some of the cowboy shooters at our club can only use federal primers because their guns are so tricked out with light springs they won't fire off any other brand. Guess that makes them softer.

After loading and shooting a few million, Indeed, the Federal SPP and magnum SPP are the softest in the industry. Often when I've run out of standard, I've substituted magnum with any issues.
All my PPC competition revolvers are set up for Federal primers.
SemiAutos only get Winchester or CCI!

Cup thickness/hardness is the same between standard and magnum of the same brand. The compound for ignition is different.

In those few pistol cartridges that operate at rifle pressures, rifle primers are typically called for which is where the cup thickness/hardness comes into play.

You mean an actual credible link? :)

The best I can tell you after years of looking for an elusive credible link is according to rumor control department located beside the scuttlebutt is that Federal Primers have always had a reputation for being the more sensitive and some will claim hotter (primer brisance) than other common primers available.

I have no idea how accurate the above table is. There is quite a bit to a little tiny primer ranging from cup thickness to cup metal hardness to the cake mixture sensitivity and even the tiny anvil design.

Something I have found to be factual is when primer questions arise a simple phone call to manufacturers actually can get good results with credible information. Recently called CCI with a question and within an hour had a primer expert call me back and they even responded to my email. Thus if you have primer specific questions for load data I suggest a phone call or email to the guys making the things. While I am aware they can't put anything on the Internet unless it is true the Internet sometimes leaves a little to be desired much as the Rumor Control Department. :)

Sorry I did not have a pistol primer dimension chart.

Not exactly. Direct from CCI Tech support several months ago,

I do not know how this applies to PISTOL primers however. Rifle are different

Subject: RE: CCI Ammo - Ask the Expert Form

below you will find the primer differences.

Large rifle primers
CCI-200............................ standard mix, standard cup, and standard anvil.
CCI-250............................ Magnum primer, Mag primer mix, thick cup, standard anvil.
BR2.................................... thick cup, standard priming mix held to a tighter tolerance, standard anvil.

So they are really not harder primers, just a thicker
