Knife sales to be banned for under-18s
By Andrew Porter, Deputy Political Editor

THE HOME OFFICE will announce a raft of measures this week to crack down on knife crime. In an attempt to allay fears about rising levels of violence, shops will be banned from selling knives to under-18s and stiffer penalties will be imposed on those caught carrying knives on the street.

David Blunkett, the home secretary, wants a five-year sentence — similar to that for people carrying guns — to be the penalty for those in possession of knives. It follows recent high-profile cases in which home owners were murdered while attempting to tackle burglars entering their properties.

The issue has become central to the debate on crime, with the Conservatives putting forward a private member’s bill to clear the way for homeowners to use everything but “grossly disproportionate†force to tackle intruders.

Blunkett is keen to stop the Tories gaining the upper hand in the debate. Tony Blair, the prime minister, was quick to concede last week that the law on tackling intruders may need to be changed and even hinted that he may support the bill put forward by Patrick Mercer, the Tory MP.

Home Office minister Hazel Blears last month revealed the extent of the rise in knife crimes. She said that in 2003, 272 of the UK’s 1,007 murder victims were killed in knife attacks, 70 more than in 1997.

And the Youth Justice Board has said that up to 300,000 of Britain’s 10m pupils take knives into class, even though it is now a specific criminal offence. Most claim they are for “self-defenceâ€. Figures for London show that one in six muggings involves someone carrying a knife.

The new measures are likely to be added to the crime initiatives announced in the Queen’s Speech. The revised law would extend the ban on under-16s buying knives to under-18s. Last month City financier John Monckton was stabbed and killed at his Chelsea home. His death followed a similar incident in Chiswick, west London, in October when Robert Symons was killed by burglars.

That is something. At the start of WW2 the NRA had a drive in this country to collect guns to send to England because at that time they thought that maybe the Germans would invade England and the people didn't own guns to protect their self or country. 60 years later they still don't want you to own guns and now want to restrict how old to be to own a knife. You would think 60 years ago they would have learned a lesson that they would never forget. Like they say if you don't lean from history it will repeat itself. Look at Germany today. Every election they elect more and more who look at things like the Germans of the late 30s did

Damn, but 20/20 vision is good. I think they are blinded by their biases.

1. They ban guns and are apalled when people use other implements to kill each other. Knives, bats, pipes, chains. I guess they haven't yet figured out that where where is a will, there is a way.

2. Can't understand why people want to defend their homes and lives. I mean, if a group of crazed whatevers burst in your house and kill your wife and rape your daughter you should be a good witness, but take no action of your own!

3. Ban knives because knife crimes are on the rise (since guns have been eliminated). Einstein Look Out!

4. They are also in the process of banning offensive speech, whatever that means. This is in a bifurcated challenge to support the muslims AND to prevent harsh words which might result in a knifing!

The stupidit is :what:

But they can still go to the local Home Depot (or whatever) and buy a sheet of glass for their house, or for a project, or for the neighbor's window they broke playing cricket in the street, and smash it into shards, buy some tape (to make handles), and conceal them, correct? What about metal shanks from shop? Can they sharpen them? Pointy sticks? Fresh Fruit? It should all be banned for the chillllldddrrrrrrreeennnnn!!! :uhoh: :scrutiny: :cuss:
