OK, my blue press is broken. :(

But on the bright side, I called Dillon today & already have the tracking number of the package sent to me. :D

Nooooooooooo! But seriously, I didn't know they could break like that. I haven't started reloading...yet...but is this something that happens to presses? I always saw it as a one time investment sort of thing.

It IS a one-time investment.

It is a one time investment type of thing .... with Dillon. They warranty EVERYTHING and I have never heard of them questioning a repair, refurbish or replacement.

RCBS has a lifetime warranty, too but the Green people are not as enthusiastic about it as the Blue People.

Lost Sheep (basically a Red person)

p.s.
Wow how could that happen? Must have been poorly heat treated. At least they have a great warrenty
How much heat treating does one do to castings?

I suspect the little dent in the wood in front of the press may be the culprit, too much torque.

I would notch that piece out, your press may work better....

To edit: When I built my work bench, I had to do some cutting to let the press move freely and then reinforce where the weak points were. I would bet your reloading will be better, getting false cam-over's and bullet seating, having to push harder. It just may take a round sander drum in your drill to knock it down a tick.

I've never had a problem with RCBS. I told them my Uniflow hopper was scratched up, chipped and wanted to make sure I got the right hopper, they sent me a new one, no questions asked. I needed a new Ram for my JR 3 press, I asked about if the spring is on the ram as mine was ground up a bit in that area and got one in the mail about 5 days later. They are good people, not undermining the blue folks at all, they are good too. I just happened to inherit RCBS stuff from my dad when he passed.

I had a similar part break on a Square Deal a couple of years ago. The replacement part was in my mail box within 72 hours. I have nothing but good things to say about Dillon and RCBS.

RCBS has the same warranty and the same warranty performance. We green folk are every bit as enthusiastic....we just don't have to use it as often. Cast Iron is a bit tougher.

Seriously, O.P, Sorry for your temporary setback. Don't you wish you could get that kind of service from your computer manufacturer?

I am going home and hug my 550 tonight.

LOL!!! Well said!

As with anything mechanical, they do break from time to time NO matter who makes it. Blue, Red, Green ...... That is why we buy with a Lifetime warranty. But if this is a new press, I guess Dillon has gone to China for their quality parts....

Oh my, that is unusual, however I worked in the biz of maintaining machinery and know that everything can break. I knew you would get good treatment on the warranty. I like to buy quality tools, and they usually last a long time, however, that said, I have broken my share of tools. It happens. :D

The little tiny mark on the wood has nothing to do with it.

Stuff happens.

The good news is most reloading companies stand by their stuff 100%, indefinitely. We are lucky to have an industry with some of the best customer service there is.

Reloaders have it good. :)

Dillon does treat its customers great. At least this customer. I still use an old Dillon 450 press. After moving I couldn't find the powder hopper. I called Dillon to order a new one. They told me not to worry about it and sent me a new one at no cost to me at all. They have done the same with primer pick up tubes. Someday I will upgrade but the 450 has always worked fine for me. Can't even remember how long I've had it. Bought it right after Dillon put it on the market.

That crack looks like it was caused when the handle was going up and the ram was coming down. Were you dealing with a sticky case when it broke?

RCBS has the same warranty and the same warranty performance.

I agree. I think Dillon may have emulated RCBS. I remember calling for parts I lost and RCBS refusing payment. First time was in the '70s.

I know you blue press guys will not like reading this, but my my (dark) red press has never done that.

Neither has mine, but it's worn to the point I no longer load on it.

I as well say the marking on wood has nothing to do with it as the crack would be caused by retracting...... restoring to the ram to its normal end of cyc

Lol, i love threads like this. Everyone says "my Dillon is 1000%" and when it breaks they say "dillon was great about sending me parts immediately".

So whats your story?

I know you blue press guys will not like reading this, but my my (dark) red press has never done that.
You're right, I became livid when I read your press hadn't broken. I am going to be be severly depressed knowing the press of a total stranger had never broken. Why must people brag about their lack of bad luck?

I broke the crank on my 550, the tec on the phone said it happens quite a bit. Why they make them and the links out of Aluminum I don't understand. It is a good thing Dillons have a lifetime warranty, because they do break on occasion.
