Dealing with gun shoppers all day is turning into a lesson in just how stupid some people in the public really are. They come in and "ask your opinion as a gun dealer", and then argue with everything you tell them, while waving guns around like a monkey with the last banana... muzzle sweeping everybody in the store, and handling the firearm like a gameboy toy.

I've had, in the last week, no less than 2 customers come back in with bullets put in backwards in their magazines, 3 with bullets stuck in muzzle loaders, and 3 who "had a buddy" work on their gun and foul it up with rounds stuck in the chamber... most of them totally unaware that the guns were ready to rock, and one careless pull on the trigger would have killed somebody.

We've had felons come in trying to get straw purchases by getting their girlfriends buy guns for them, and evidently think that gun dealers are so badly in need of a sale that they're going to risk their firearms license and jail to accommodate them.

In a gun shop, you see it all... It makes me wonder why you can't refuse to sell a gun to people who exhibit "felony stupidity"... and then send them out the door hooked up with an upcoming court date.

someone had a bad day at work? Lol, sorry couldn't resist. Most people just go off of "what they heard" or what they learned from TV. Most will never look up any legal document to figure out what is going on and don't trust anyone or anything. The belief that a 4473 is a "registration" is one that amuses me.

You could always ban those unsafe people from entering your shop, or maybe post a sign that says "bugger hook off the bang switch" outside of the front door.

truth be told ... humans are pretty stupid and inept.

we think we are highly evolved but I really don't think so.

I suspect when some aliens from another world show up we are going to be in a lot of trouble.

Caveat venditor!

Alternately: "We reserve the right to refuse service to any patron(s)."

As a customer, I feel your pain to a much lesser degree. Some behaviors upset me to the point where I will leave a gun store, and tell an employee on my way out that I'm leaving because of foolish behavior. I can only imagine the frustration of dealing with those people as the vendor, and wonder if you must become somewhat inured to it.

Doesn't this put you in the same boat? Shouldn't you get hooked up as well for not understanding the law?

You aren't a cop and stupidity isn't against the law. That is why.

Having worked behind the gun counter in a "sporting goods" store, worst job I ever had, I can tell you that there are mouth breathers on both sides of the counter. I had a customer tell me he was issued a M14 chambered in 7.62x54R during his "black ops", his words not mine, days in Vietnam so that it would look like the Russians had been the ones to massacre a village. I looked at him like he was an idiot and walked off. And then I know of a dealer that swears up and down that Mattel made M16s during Vietnam. Does not matter that he can not seem to come up with one shred of evidence. It's a gov't cover up...

Point is uninformed and under educated people are everywhere. But I did get tired of the "I am the customer so everything I say or do is right" attitude. If you are wrong be man enough to admit it. And take time to listen and maybe learn something new.

Perhaps, if they see that you get a bit in a fluster, they could be setting you up, I suppose. Does it seem that the same things are happening only with different customers?

I can hear the conversation now. "If you really want to rattle that guy's cage, just do this and this and go into the store and show him and watch him go off the wall."

Maybe, maybe not, just sayin'!

If only it were a crime I could charge for. I probably would have slapped a good eighth of the people I know with it. Things people need to do before asking dumb questions:

I can. :D

I fully understand where youre coming from with the Viet Nam (and few other places) stuff. Ive had boys tell me they used to load their M14's with tracers to direct fire, and could easily shoot 4" groups at 100m with them on full auto. Then there was the "we used to drill out the noses on .45's, and insert .22 blanks, to make explosive rounds for our M3's" thing.

He said, "It makes me wonder why..."

I'm still in favor of a ticket & fine for being really stupid in public. And one for public profanity in front of women and children. John

John, the Puritans used to do that. Only they usually put people in the stocks instead of fine them. Did the same thing if you missed church, hung out with a girl for too long, or were too friendly to the Indians. Sound's great, doesn't it :scrutiny:

According to snopes.com, the handgrips were made by Mattel, I guess. On stupid people and their right to be stupid, none of us are experts on everything. As a physicist, I notice a lot of funny ideas that people have about science from watching too much TV, but I don't blame them for not being college educated on science.

The 4473 as a "gun registration" is the one that gets me.

That's a pretty cleverly-done PhotoShop job. Too bad the Mattel logo is the wrong one for the time period.

Yeah, it's original... original Photoshop.
That is what I think too. I have never seen documentation that they ever made rifles, in fact they will deny it if you ask them. According to Mattel they NEVER made rifles. Anyhoo... people are people and will do and say stoopid* things. It seems worse in the firearms world. Once someone buys a firearm they become an expert and are able to pick off gnats at 1000m with a .22...

* yes I know it is spelled stupid...

The m-16 in the picture is one someone had engraved. I think there was something along the lines of the parent company of Matel- a plastics company or something- doing the handguards. So it was in part "made by Matel"; not really though.

Trust me... from time to time we've all walked away from some person or people, and they've said "Can you believe that guy?"

I worked in retail auto parts for almost 7 years. The stress of car troubles, a lack of mechanical knowledge, and a tight budget makes for some dreadful customer employee interactions.

Not everyone who owns a gun, or wants to own one is going to be a certified armorer. OP it sounds to me like you're just making yourself miserable in the work place by focusing on the negative.

From this week:

Hand loads +
Improperly sized brass +
Custom precision rifle with match chamber +
A lot of force on the bolt =
Stuck cartridge.

Not stupid until you add:
1 wooden dowel +
1 hammer =
Expensive fix by gunsmith.

I can't complain too much, as the stupid and incompetent are funding my daughter's college education.
