Feral Hog's

.22 long rifle is used routinely in small packing houses to stun a hog. I have seen it fail and the hog not go down with a shot between the eyes from 3 inches away. Hogs are tough, especially the big ones with thick skulls. I know the .17 is ballistically superior to the .22, but still...

Based on what I see in packing houses, I would recommend a larger caliber.

As often times you are restricted to only use the weapons for what game is in season, which in small game season is rimfires. Since a hog is not classified as a game animal in many places it is nott illegal to shoot them with these calibers. Here I know many people that have killed hogs with a 22 lr but advocate a 17 hmr or 22wmr for rimfire uses. I would focus your shots to the area from the ear to the eye (in between) and to the base of the skull, where it attatches to the neck.

just about a definitive thread on hog hunting as you can find

question to the OP is bait trapping legal where you live, cause I'd just do that and pick off the stragglers with something a bit more than .17
if you don't want the neighbors to complain put a suppressor on it.

IF the hog is declared an invasive, you aren't restricted to 'game' laws, and in some state are REQUIRED to kill on sight
for invasives there is no season and no caliber restrictions where I live, just saying it might be good to double tap your law.

From a quick read of the Kentucky hunting regulations it seems that in non hunting season you are restricted to a "22" caliber firearm, it didn't specify 22 rimfire so I assume you could use a 223 Remington or such.

No, rimfire is not suitable for hogs. I do have to admit that the same thing was said to me after I took my hog with my Glock27. I was impressed how my carry ammo performed. Seeing the hog was not edible, nasty taste, I won't be shooting another. I shoot off the porch at my camp all the time....of course, Texas is a whole nother country.....chris3

And yahoo behavior like that is what the anti-gunners feed off of. It's insane/ignorant enough to shoot around YOUR own house, but ingnorance to the 10th degree to do it around OTHER people's living quarters. Shooting a RIFLE 125 yards from someone's home is assinine. There are no mitigating circumstances on this one.
LOL... I know two people who shoot rimfire IN their house, and plenty of others who use all sorts of firearms/calibers to target shoot and hunt off their porches.
No danger to those inside the house, except maybe from the ignorance of others such as you.
Plenty of local/state laws/ordinances that disagree with you.

reading the usual, inhumane, not enough gun, crap etc. I am overrun with feral hogs, some really big ones in my cattle pastures and my deer lease, I use my .17hmr a lot. not just head shots , but body shots make the innards jello....dont believe the crowd that says it cant or shouldnt be used. wished I had the time to show these experts results but cant do it. shoot a big pig with a .17hmr, cut him open and check out the internal damage, that should shut em up.
