The gun in question is my ar flat top .223. I have always used iron sights so I am new to this end of the game. I am looking to shot 150-300 yards. I don't really want a fixed power or illumation What kind of magnification would I need to see this far ? Also do I want to co wintness with the front sight

Can you see 300 yards now?

What size targets are you planning on shooting?

Optics pretty much fall into two classes: 1X reflex type sights like the Aimpoint (my favorite), Eotech, and a few others.

The reflex optic's advantages are that they a very, very fast at close range, have no impact on field of view, and they work at night. Disadvantages are that the 1X optics don't help you see targets and they don't gather light, which helps with night shooting.

Magnified optics gather light and magnify the target. The downside is that eye placement behind the optic is critical for being able to see thru it and at very close range magnified optics just aren't that fast.

Everything is compromise. What compromises make sense for you depends on what type of shooting you're planning on doing.

Cant you use a reflex type optic, then mount a light-gathering magnification device in front of it? You can then remove the magnifier for short range? I have seen setups like this, but have no experience.

Look at the lower powered scopes in the 1-4x24 range. I have started using these on my .223 rifles and have found them to be more useful than a red dot only optic. At 1x you can use them like a red dot, then dial it up for the range needed.
Burris Tac30, Millett DMS, Nikon m223 are all nice for the money. Co witness will not work on magnified optics. You will not be able to see the front sight at all.

What is the rifles purpose?

Defense? Then an Aimpoint T1 or M3 in a tall Larue mount is the way to go.

Plinking? Hunting? 3 gun? Then maybe a Trijicon 1-4x or Nightforce 1-4x will work better for you.

Something in a 1.5-5X or 2-7X as long as it has a 32mm or larger front objective. Most 1.5-5X scopes have 20mm front objectives so I'd lean toward the 2-7X.

The larger front objective is much better in low light. With 7X on the top end you get a bit more magnification for precision shooting at longer ranges. You will never notice the difference between 1.5X and 2X on the low end. Either have a wide field of view that will allow you to pick up targets quickly at close to medium range.

I put a 2-7x28 on mine. drop it to 2x and I can shoot pretty close in, and 7x and a sand bag is good enough for a coke can at 150 yds. Now, I don't think a scope will co-witness.

I go this way now also.
shotgun scopes work well on AR platforms due to the extended eye relief combined with low magnification.
one of my AR's has a fixed 2.5 shotgun scope, the other AR has a 1.5-4x shotgun scope
