Fiber optic sights...Any Opinions?

To my old eyes they look like a roadflare when shooting in daylight.

Nighttime? not so much

And some FO front sights are sharper than the dickens and rake a curl of leather when drawing from a leather holster.

It can block the sight.

don't ask me how I know this:eek:

Funny thing about the JPoint (and the Docter and similar sights), I had one on my CZ75 SA and it was a disaster. Every time I drew, I had to hunt for the dot. Unless I made an efort to tilt the gun down, I was looking at an empty window. I finally took it off and installed it on my 10/22 where it works perfectly.

On the XDm, I don't have to hunt for the dot at all. It's always right there when the gun comes up. Otherwise, I wouldn't use it on my primary carry gun.

I'm assuming the difference is in the gun's grip angle and my physical makeup.

So, don't count on an optical sight working for you on any particular pistol.

Also, as strange as it might seem, I can shoot better groups with black iron sights than with the JPoint. The difference in group size is only about an inch at 25 yds. For steel or the plate rack or any other fast shooting, it makes no real accuracy difference and the dot sight is certainly faster to hit with.

I'd rather have the dot sight in a gunfight, because the dot is in the same focal plane as the target.

I remember that when I first tried a Doctor sight that was set up on a S&W M627 ICORE Racegun...same thing, I had to tilt it down to see the dot. Of course, this was during a class where I was shooting a Sig 22o ;)

When you shoot an open sighted revolver, you do tilt it down to align the sights...it just isn't as obvious because the sights are closer to the bore and you're used to looking straight through an optic...like a rifle scope

I have the TFO's on my old Glock 23 and love the sights. They look amazing in daylight and at night they glow as well. I have the ones with green front sight and yellow rear. Seems to work pretty well for defense guns but probably not the best for target guns.

I despise them along with three-dot sights and whiteoutline/orange insert nonsense. In sunlight they tend to wash out everything else. Not very well-suited to fine work. A plain black, serrated post is still best.
