Field and Stream's top 25 list: handguns for hunting

Way too many .22s

Agreed.

That said, with as narrow a scope as hunting handguns are anyway, it should be "top five". Top ten, at most. There aren't 25 "hunting" handguns in production to choose the best from.

As the .22's are concerned, what makes a good target gun makes a good hunting gun. I'd exclude them from the list altogether, make a separate "best" list for small game pistols. Lumping them in with big bore, big game guns is apples to oranges.

Though I don't own any guns chambered in these calibers, I can't believe they made no mention of a single .460 or .500 SW maggie. I would gladly dump the Walther P22 from the listing and replace it with a SW x-frame.

1. .22LR (Mark III, Single Six, Buckmark, M17, pick your poison)
2. .357 Mag (GP100, N-Frame, Python, Blackhawk)
3. .44 Mag or .45 Colt (Blackhawk, Redhawk)
4. Some super-magnum, it hardly matters which caliber (Super Redhawk or FA Model 83)
5. T/C Encore or G2 with barrels (.22LR, .223, .357 Max, .35 Rem, 7-30 Waters, 7mm-08)

Yup, that would cover eveything.

An odd and motley assortment, in my view. And that many .22s? I suppose that your perspective changes greatly depending on what exactly it is that you are hunting. Still, a Umarex-made P22? I don't think so -- not if my next meal depends on it.

any random person fairly likely to like something on the list
but as a top 25 "handguns for hunting list", it's pretty silly
pasted up by the boys in the advertising department, probably over a couple of tall, cold ones..
but they pretty much managed to get all their advertisers acknowledged, which was the primary objective
