As per this thread I've employed EC-10's wonderful discovery that a M-14 magazine is almost a perfect fit in a short action RUGER M77. The main reason for my doing this is to allow for a longer magazine facilitating using ammo with a longer C.O.L. BUT those 6 extra rounds are kinda nice as well. A couple hours of careful fitting of the mag was all that was required for the swap. The only part of the rifle that was modified was the floorplate hinge assy was shortened slightly. Total cost minus the rifle was $15:D

Cripes that looks hot. This'll work for the Target guns too, yeah?

Looks like I'll be scheduling another project.

Where are your guys sourcing your mags?

Best price?

Where to get the .308 stripper clips?

I am itching to do this with my frontier scout...

I bought my ten round off of Ebay and the twenty round from Midway. The one from Midway is a Springfield Armory part and is built from a higher grade steel.

I just wanted the ten round.

I would really just like to get some good strippers and see if they will dump into the factory mag with an adapter fitted to the rear ring mount.

I already have some rings I can weld on....

A stripper clip won't work for the frontier scout without relieving the top of th reciever or seating the bullets excessively deep.

I haven't measured or looked at the possibility of cutting the stripper clip guide directly into the rear of the reciever, but I think it will put the base of the cartridge too far back to push down into the mag.

Wonder if Ruger will see these posts and come out with "Improved" models, like they did with the Mini-14... everything they did with the Mini-14 was already done by people who posted online...

Somewhere in a darkened room lit only by the glare of a computer monitor an "anti" weeps. Krochus, you should be ashamed of yourself.

For those of you looking for good stripper clips, try these from Creedmoor Sports. I have some that I use with a Rem 700 (clip slot milled into the receiver) and they work well for me. I've also used clips that came with Aussie 7.62 surplus but they aren't nearly as slick as these, so loading took more effort.

What keeps it in place?

The M-14 magazine has a tab welded on the back of it that engages the magazine catch on an M-14 (or M1A). On mine the magazine is held in place by the front edge of the trigger guard and the stock itself (see the pics below). It looks like it would be pretty easy to just rock the magazine forward and drop it out of my rifle. I have tried this and other methods (including dropping the rifle) to try and dislodge the magazine but it just stays put.

Krocus appears to have done his just slightly different than mine. It looks like the forward bracket for the factory floor plate hinge engages a slot in the front of the magazine. I assume that the synthetic stock did not hold the magazine in place the same way my laminate stock does.

OH! it did fine with just the trigger guard holding the mag in place, But I wanted the tighten things up to the n'th degree and also do away with the empty space left in front of the mag so I went ahead and cut that slot into the mag and fitted the hinge assy into it mostly for the sake of tinkering.
