OK. This is my final decision on my new build. I am putting together a Ruger RAR ,22LR that will be used 85% for punching paper and 15% small game. I have it narrowed down to these two scopes (if a mod can add a poll that would be awesome. Please do not let the difference in price affect your decision.

I am having a really tough choice with this. People love their Vortex but I have heard such good things for so long about Mueller.

Please chime in, if you know of something comparable you prefer please feel free.

What kind if range are you looking to shoot at? Is it a longer distance and that's why the high magnification? I have a Nikon rimfire 3-9 with the rimfire BDC and everyone who uses it loves it. I really like it because I can use their spot on app and either use the bdc matched to what ammo I'm using or it tells me a number of clicks to adjust for my desired distance. So far it actually has been quite accurate.

Since your planning on using it for hunting part time, I would avoid optics with adjustable parallax. For punching paper it's fine, but in the field one just doesn't often have the time to tune the glass for the shot. First you must range the shot so the parallax can be set accordingly, then pick the power setting, and then focus the diopter lens. By the time all this optical adjustment has been accomplished, the animal will be long gone.

Or you can just pre-set the parallax to some reasonable value for your hunting conditions and use it like a 'scope without parallax adjustments or zoom - no problem.

You don't HAVE to use every available adjustment in the field before each shot just because it's there . . . but you DO have the option.

;)

Sorry to disappoint a few a of you. I picked up the Vortex 4-12x40 for $169. I thought that was a pretty good deal and I like the length and weight of it better than the Mueller. It would not surprised me if I picked up a Mueller pretty soon to compare.

Not trying to steal your thread here: About 3 months ago, I bought a Vortex Viper HS 6X24X50 scope for my .223 rifle, I absolutely love it! I've never owned a quality scope like this, not my first scope, but one of this quality. Enjoy !
